Marsupialus

"Ow ya goin' Tommie boy," the Kangaroo muttered through the single straw hanging from his lip. His speech could barely be considered common, and I approached in a futile attempt for clarity.

"I'm sorry? Could you say that again?"

"Oy, juss chuckin' a goss, mate." The roo chuckled and slapped my back with deceptively high strength. I stumbled forward and regained my balance, avoiding the puddle of muddy water in the road. "Ar ya goin, Tommie?"

I could tell the Roo was speaking basic words, but my mind couldn't grasp the context. "What? I don't understand. Um. My name's not Tommie..."

"Ya boogin me, lad?" The roo's expression soured as if it was I who was speaking in riddles and heavy slang. He pointed toward the tavern just up the road and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "Pull the snake out ya ears n come gander 'for the dronk takes yer nelson."

More information...

Marsupialus are anthropomorphic kangaroos, opossums, Wombat, gliders, and Thylacine Devils. Each of these subraces are vastly different from each other except for the pouch they all have. They raise their young inside that pouch until they're old enough to crawl. Some mothers still carry their offspring in their pouch until adolescence.

Kangaroos are tall with strong legs similar to rabbits built for jumping long distances and moving at great speeds with the help of their thick tail used for balance. Their fur is generally red, brown, or gray. Their hands and feet are covered in fur with rough calloused pads and non-retractable claws. Opossums are short and reminiscent of rats with their bare fleshy hands, feet, and long thin tails. The tail is prehensile and strong enough to support their weight The fur on their face is usually white while the rest is gray.

Wombats look like bulky mice with long faces. Their pouch is upside down, an evolutionary trait that kept soil from getting inside while burrowing. Their fur ranges between various shades of brown.

Gliders are very similar to opossums except their tails are furred and not prehensile and they have a flesh membrane, or patagium, extending from their ankles to their wrists used for gliding.

Thylacine Devils are stalky and muscular, similar to wolverines with a broad and short rat-like face. Their fur is usually black with irregular white patches on the chest.

History

Due to such short pregnancies, Marsupialus brains do not develop as well as other mammal races. As a result, they were among the last of the beastial races to develop sapience.

By the time the Beast War began, Marsupialus had been tribal for only five generations. Koalas were the first race to become extinct after their only source of food was destroyed entirely during the war. Most of the Marsupialus races fled and hid before they could be slaughtered by the Shahallan forces. Thylacine Devils were the exception, and many were hired as mercenaries to protect other tribes in exchange for food, shelter, and what luxuries tribal living offered. A single  group of five devils was enough to halt a whole battle-company of Shahallan soldiers due to their ferocity and their ear shattering cries.

When the war ended, Udraykeland offered refuge to many tribes. Most marsupialus accepted and now few Marsupialus tribes still exist. Those that do still employ thylacine devils as champions.

Society

The vast majority of Marsupialus have integrated into other societies, blending in with laborers, soldiers, farmers, and other similar pursuits. Very few have the capacity for careers that require much study. Some are natural sorcerers, but almost none are wizards or bards.

Kangaroos blended in best as sentries, warriors, soldiers, or monks.

Opossums more commonly dwell with rodentia in the sewers or underground. They are more often than not drawn to be warlocks or sorcerers, bringing the arcane arts to the black markets when they're not reclusive druids in the swamps.

Gliders live anywhere chiropterus or elves are common, preferring homes high in the trees to caves.

Wombats stay close to the ground, if not beneath it, with the dwarves, edentatus, or fennecs as laborers, builders, miners, and diggers.

Thylacine devils are commonly mistaken for wolverines and thus most don't live anywhere humans do. Those that aren't championed to a tribe either live as hermits or mercenaries.

Language

Due to the vast differences between Marsupialus subraces, their language is riddled with dialects as different as common and undercommon. Despite this, their pronunciations remain the same. Their verbiage uses many elongated dipthongs, a lack of strong "r" sounds. This odd language results in a peculiar accent upon learning common or teaching it to their offspring. Any long "a" sound such as in "way" ends up sounding like "wye". "Ou" sounds such as in "ground" end up sounding like "grand." To make them even more difficult to understand, the Marsupialus common is filled with slang and odd figures of speech. For example, if you were to ask a Kangaroo which direction to the next town, he may point and say, "Head yonder fifty K's South'a woop woop n' bobs yer uncle. "

Marsupialus Names

Marsupialus are named in adolescence by the birth parents. While they're growing in the pouch, their gender is unknown so they go by Joey. The actual naming convention for Marsupialus is odd and doesn't seem to follow any set formula. Some names are just a bastardization of names in other languages while others are made up words with no real meaning.

gollark: Nope.
gollark: No. I would mention that.
gollark: No, Linux, and it is being cold booted.
gollark: Hmm, so, my laptop is acting in a fairly bees fashion. I turned it on and the fans are spinning a bit but there is nothing onscreen and the keyboard backlight is stuck on.
gollark: so the government is… overly restricting knives, a *winning* strategy.
