Races (An Age of Ice and Stone Setting)

In the world of An Age of Ice and Stone, there are none of the typical races found in high fantasy. Orcs, elves, and dwarves simply do not exist. Instead, there are different tribes of hominid found scattered throughout the world. The overall population is low, in keeping with the primitive setting, and few indeed are the cities that number as many as a thousand people. Most settlements are less than one hundred souls.

Illiteracy is the norm, and most races treat metal weapons and armor as exotic due to their unfamiliarity. None save the sun people know anything of advanced metallurgy, and for them alloying copper and tin into bronze is the apex of their prowess.

Tribes of Man

These are the races of Homo sapiens, the dominant species and the one most common in the known world.

Tribes of the Horse People - Nomadic horse-riding hunters who follow herds of mammoth and bison.

Tribes of the Jungle People - Strong and hearty people who live in stilt houses to avoid predacious dinosaurs.

Tribes of the Pale People - Semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers living on the fringes of the Known World.

Tribes of the Sea People - Seafaring raiders who prey on the weak and trade with the strong.

Tribes of the Sun People - Advanced bronze-workers who serve the god-kings of Etarask.

The Ancient Men

These are races of species other than H. sapiens.

Cave People; Homo neanderthalensis

Island People; Homo floresiensis

Mountain People; Homo denisova

Great People; Homo heidelbergensis

Subhumans

These are those races which come from genera other than Homo.

Ape-Men; An Australopithecine or similarly primitive species, perhaps Homo habilis or Paranthropus.
