As you run towards the warp pipe, a large mouth comes out slowly ready to attack.

Piranha Plants are large venus fly traps. The grow abundant on Yoshi's Island, Lavalava Island, and Keelhaul Key. Yoshi's Island is the place where all Piranha Plants originate. It is unknown how they spread from the secluded isle.

Combat

Most common as warp pipe stalking beasts, the piranha plant attacks by popping out of it's pipe, or from the ground in their wilder state, and biting their prey and holding on until their prey is dead or wounded.
