Path of the Heartstoker (5e Subclass)

Path of the Heartstoker

Rally the Forces, Steven Belledin, 2011

Barbarian Subclass

The Heartstoker is a strange variety of Barbarian largely inspired by the Vulshok of the Mirrodin plane from the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse. These barbarians carry an inner fire that they share with their allies, inspiring bravery and heroism with their very presence in battle. Allies inspired by this barbarian find their courage stoked by the flames shared with them, resulting in a rally of the forces.

Barbarians choose this path based on a need for harder-hitting allies who stand their ground and do not flee from a difficult battle.

"As long as we have the will to fight, we are never without weapons." ~Koth of the Hammer, Slagstorm (2011)

Quick Build

You can make a Path of the Heartstoker Barbarian quickly by following these suggestions. First, Constitution should be your highest ability score, followed by Strength.

Inner Fire

When you select this path at 3rd level, you emanate a fiery, magical aura while you rage. The aura extends 10 feet from you in every direction, but not through total cover. This aura forces creatures within your radius to make a Constitution saving throw equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier or take 1d6 fire damage on a failed save or half on a successful one. This damage increases to 2d6 at 8th level, to 3d6 at 13th level, and to 4d6 at 18th level.

If a creature begins its turn in your radius, it takes 1d6 fire damage at the start of your turn.

Molten Skin

When you reach 6th level, your skin turns to molten slag, providing you with natural armor. Your armor cannot be reduced below 16 and your unarmed strikes deal an additional 1d4 fire damage as your enemies are burned by your touch. Damage taken this way cannot be reduced. Furthermore, you cannot wear heavy armor, as it will melt around your heated core.

Heartstoker

At 10th level, you learn how to share your inner fire with your allies. You may pick a number of creatures equal to half of your Constitution modifier within 30 feet when you enter a rage. These creatures gain an additional 10 feet of movement speed and the ability to add your rage damage bonus to one damage roll made with a melee weapon.

Gout of Flame

At 14th level, immediately after a creature in your aura hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to force that creature make a Constitution saving throw equal to 8 + your proficiency modifier + your Constitution modifier. On a failed save, that creature takes fire damage equal to your Barbarian level or half as much on a successful save. You may use this feature a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier.
