Description

A thick wool cloak, typically quite short, used to parry away weapons and protect oneself from inclement weather. This item is based on real historical combat practices as taught by fencing masters of the 15th and 16th centuries. Although a parrying cloak is used similarly to a weapon , it can not be used to inflict damage or make tripping attacks.

To make use of a parrying cloak, the wielder must have proficiency with shields, and must be able to use their dexterity bonus when defending (not flat-footed, prone, or immobilized).

A parrying cloak provides a +2 AC bonus if it succeeds in an attack roll against an attacking weapon or ammunition. This functions the same as if using a weapon to make a sundering attack (DC 10 + size modifier of the weapon + dexterity bonus of the attacker), except it does no damage. This bonus is reduced to +1 when defending against piercing weapons or ammunition and any weapon that is one size category larger than the parrying cloak itself (unless it is made of steel chain). A parrying cloak can not defend against a weapon more than one size category larger than itself.

Using a parrying cloak counts as an attack action, and takes the usual penalty for dual wielding. If the defender has the two-weapon fighting feat and the two-weapon defense feat, using a parrying cloak becomes a free action, but it does not grant the +1 AC bonus that wielding a second weapon would grant. If the defender has the cloak dance feat, they gain an additional +1 when using their parrying cloak.
