Physical Qualities

A typical Lantern Dog stands 4'7 feet high at the shoulder and weights 320 lbs.. It is 21 feet in total length; the tail is 14 feet in length out of the 21 feet. It's a big (small body build) dog-looking creature with sooty-black fur with lava moving through markings at its surface. The Lantern Dog's mouth, eyes and ears also seem to appear like lava is flowing through them.

The Lantern Dog's 14 foot long tail has what looks like a Black John Lewis Box Lantern attached to the end. The outlines of the lantern are very hard and covered in a thin layer of fur. The "glass" is two thin layers of transparent layers of bone. The first layer is extremely tough and hard to break while the inner layer can withstand temperatures up to 2,192 degrees (Fahrenheit). Within the lantern shines a hot glowing light; it's believed to be the Lantern Dog's soul.

The glass of the lantern is the only bone inside and outside of this creature. What are mistaken for bones are igneous rocks that are formed from the lava within the Lantern Dog. Lava can reach temperatures up to 2,192 degrees (Fahrenheit). The Lantern Dogs has one layer of skin. The internal part of its skin can contain this temperature. The external skin, as well as the glass of the lantern, is cool; about 60 degrees (Fahrenheit).

The eyes, ears, inside of the mouth, and the glowing markings on the underside and chest area are the same degree as the lava inside. The Lantern Dog's whole body maintains a lava flow that circulates throughout the entire body. Because of the constant pull of lava from the flow, the lava does not leak outside of its body. By touching either the eyes, ears, or the inside of the mouth, it does 2d6 points of damage per round of exposure. Damage from it continues for 1d3 rounds after exposure but only half the damage (1d6 per round).

Language

They do not speak but understand Common, Abyssal, Sylvan, Druidic, and Infernal. Canine is the only language they can speak to communicate with dogs.

Lands

Lantern Dogs are most commonly found in the Elemental Plane of Fire. Some may choose to reside next to pools of molten lava or an active volcano in the Material Plane where the vortices to the Plane of Fire can often be found.

Society

Just like wolves; Lantern Dog's are often found in packs of 5 to 12. However, they can be in a pair or ever solitary if they choose to be. Lantern Dog's can be in a pack of their own kind or with 1d4 Hellhounds.

Relations

Lantern Dogs are considered cousins to Hellhounds while they are viewed as pets by Fire Elementals, FireBenders, Druids, Dragonborns, and Demons.

They get along with many beasts, creatures, magical creatures, wolves, and some dogs.

Alignment

Lantern Dogs are usually Neutral aligned; although they can go either way on the scale. Lantern Dogs are a Quad-Breed of Hellhound, Fire Demon, Fire Elemental and a Dog.

Despite Hellhounds and Fire Demons always being Chaotic Evil; Fire Elementals and Dogs are always Neutral.

Combat

Lantern Dogs are efficient hunters. A favorite pack tactic is to trip its prey then attack with one or two dogs.

Note: Lantern Dogs do not eat, sleep, or breath.

Breath Weapon (Su): 10-foot cone, once every 1d8 rounds, damage 2d6 fire, Reflex DC 13 half. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Fiery Bite (Su): A Lantern Dog deals an extra 1d8 points of fire damage every time it bites an opponent, as if its bite were a flaming weapon.

Trip (Ex): A Lantern Dog that is with a 21ft-31ft. range of an opponent can attempt to trip them as a free action without making a touch attack or provoking an attack of opportunity. If the attempt fails, the opponent cannot react to trip the dog.

Immunities (Ex): The Lantern Dog is immune to disease, fire, poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, critical hits, and flanking.

Restore Life (Ex): Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don’t work on an Lantern Dog. It takes a different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection, to restore it to life.

Vulnerability to Cold: The Lantern Dog takes half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from the cold.

Lava Step (Ex): The Lantern Dog may run over lava as if it were a solid surface.

Leap Attack (Ex): As a full-attack action the Lantern Dog can make a Jump check, and move up to as many feet as the check result (round up to the nearest 5 ft increment). It makes a charge attack at the end of this jump, and deals double damage on a successful hit, as well as a free great impact attempt. It does not need a running start, though it may only make long jumps with this ability. The damage is simply doubled, including bonus damage. Double the damage after critical hits or other abilities have been used. It still takes a -2 penalty to AC for charging.

Wild Empathy (Ex): The Lantern Dog has wild empathy of a druid of its level.

Fire Form (Su): If the lantern is broken, the Lantern Dog's soul will leave its lifeless body. The soul can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. A creature that touches the soul or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 5 (1d10) fire damage. In addition, the soul can enter a hostile creature's space and stop there. The first time it enters a creature's space on a turn, that creature takes 5 (1d10) fire damage and catches fire; until someone takes an action to douse the fire, the creature takes 5 (1d10) fire damage at the start of each of its turns.

Illumination (Ex): The Lantern Dog sheds bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light in an additional 30 feet.

Companions

Lantern Dogs can become companions to only Fire Elementals, Fire Benders, Druids, Dragonborns, and Demons.

By becoming a companion, the Lantern Dog obtains +3 Strength, +2 Constitution, +3 Charisma, and +2 Wisdom.

Age

Lantern Dogs are considered Immortal. However its important to know how fast one of them can mature from birth.

gollark: Anyway, a 64GB one costs about £8 nowadays and could fit probably 10000 copies of osmarks.tk.
gollark: Well, I guess that might work? The monitoring systems in the bee container would report it to me of course, and I could develop countermeasures.
gollark: Not apiopyroforms. We did research on this.
gollark: osmarks.tk™ on a micro-SD card several thousand times over?
gollark: Ah yes, burning things which are DEFINITELY NOT apiopyroforms is safe.
