Kumakin (5e Race)

Kumakin

"They have such small rounded ears on top of their heads..."
The hunter chuckled. He had finally tracked down a rare kumakin cub. As he pulls his bow back, he hears a twig snap loudly behind him. He doesn't have time to turn around.

Every little cub, has its mother's teeth to protect it.

~Buckthorn Orchis, Kumakin Historian

Physical Description

Tim the Bear, from The Cleveland Show

Kumakin are humanoid creatures closely akin to bears. Their bodies are covered in thick fur. They can stand on their two hind legs to display their full height, though this is rare. Rarer still is their display of their prehensile hands, which have a thumb appendage to grasp weapons and tools as humans do. Their ears and tail are covered in fur that can be any color from dark brown to white and, in some circumstances, have even been seen in gold. Kumakin have been recorded to stand from 5 all the way to 7 feet tall and can weigh in excess of 550 lbs. Their eyes carry a voracious predatory stare that can shake the nerves of even the most tranquil monk.

History

Kumakin history tells of a time when they were more open towards other creatures, willing to trade and socialize. However, as wars with between religious factions tore nations apart, kumakin refused to fight for any side, stoically remaining neutral in any wars that proceeded. This infuriated those who expected their loyalty and subjected them to many wartime atrocities from both sides. This treatment, in turn, led to the kumakin race developing a disdain for any kind of religion. Today, they generally desire to be left alone. They have continued to migrate further and further away from any kind of civilization as generations pass, living in some of the most exotic and hard to reach places imaginable. Kumakin have been found in all kinds of environments. Because of this, you can never quite know when you could walk into kumakin territory. There have even been recordings of kumakin turning up in snow, rainforest and deserts.

Society

Kumakin are almost entirely family sustained, with only a few cases of 2 or 3 tribes working together to survive, particularly in harsh winters. Kumakin are a completely atheist race, choosing to celebrate feats of strength and intelligence of local heroes, rather then gods that they can't see or trust. They do, however, believe in fidelity and breed for life. As such, they are very loyal and protective of their significant other. Kumakin generally only socialize with local tribes and others it has grown up with. they are thereby very close knit and territorial. It is not unheard of for not only outsiders, but also other kumakin, to be completely torn to shreds when entering territory belonging to another tribe.

There exist, however, the exiled kumakin, who are derivative of their tribal progenitors. A majority of kumakin are of the tribal subrace, but every now and then, an oddball is born as a runt of the litter. These are known as exiles, as they display an innate curiosity and wit for exploring the world around them. As such, their fates inextricably lead to their expulsion from all tribes. However, these exiled kumakin have survived by interacting with other races, as their forefathers did before their withdrawal from the world. It is believed thusly that the original, more open-hearted kumakin spirit lives on in these exiled.

gollark: Sea serpents are worse, since I couldn't explode them and they seem to instantly kill people somehow.
gollark: Just roared a bit.
gollark: I also had an invisibility cloak for unrelated reasons, but I don't know if the dragon cared about that. It didn't do any useful counterattack.
gollark: I don't believe in "TiCon Laser Gun".
gollark: You could also use one of the RA multishot bows or probably mining lasers.
