Pounce, Rake | When a Howler succeeds on a charge he may make an attack with all four claws. |
Strategies and Tactics
A Howler will stalk his prey whenever it enters his territory. Using ambush tactics the Howler will surprise, if able, his opponent with a pouncing attack. When a Howler successfully pounces on an opponent he is able to use all four claws to rake. A Howlers sharp and needle like claws can pierce into the hardened exoskeleton of most vermin. Then the Howler will jump away and plain his next assault. When a Howler is unfortunate enough to be stun he will finish the battle then go into hibernation like sleep, allowing his regeneration ability to overcome all but magical poisons. Rarely Howlers are killed by the stinger of a vermin they have attacked but when they are most vermin flee, fearing more Howlers or that the Howler may regenerate.
Ecology
Environment: Warm Desert, Plains and Savanah, Temperate Forests, Rocky regions
Typical Physical Characteristics: This furry creature has beady black eyes, large pointed cup like ears and a long tufted tail. His grass hopper like legs flex with strength as he howls vigorously at the moon while standing over the corpse of a monstrous scorpion. His sharp front teeth and talon like claws prove this dog sized critter means business. A Howlers long tail gives him excellent balance and his powerful legs allow him to jump incredible distances. A small Howler has been known to jump well over 20 feet in distance and upwards of 12 feet into the air making them dangerous ambush predators. They are incredibly flexible which accounts for their ability to land from such heights. Howlers have been known to flatten their bodies to crawl between immovable objects.
Alignment: Nuetral
Lore
This Omnivore generally will forage for food and only attacks large vermin unless threatened. Howling Hopper Mice (known also as Howlers) generally never get larger than small unless in the deep wilds where they have been rumored to be as large as bears. The Howling Hopper Mouse is a distance cousin of the diminutive hopping mouse.
Society
Solitary; Den (When they have mated Howling Hopper Mice will den together until the young have fur and can go out and hunt/forage for themselves. Then the male will typically leave. The Offspring will stay with their mother learning to hunt for up to a year.)
Sample Lair
Howlers are marsupials that keep the young in the females pouch until they have all of their fur. They prefer to den in burrows underground but can also be found in caves and in the shelter created by lean-to rocks or trees.
