History & Timeline (Years of Gold)
Calendar
Most libraries on Pansaer have an astrolabe for counting years. |
The official calendar of Pansaer, as well as the historical timeline associated with it, are a fairly new invention. They were both first proposed by a mysterious scholar known only by the pen name M. in year 2912 of the Reckoning count. Considering that writings in a similar style and on similar subjects have appeared through the years and even as of late, it is assumed M. is a hereditary pen name of some sort.
The calendar is based on the movement of sun and moon, which are imprecise on a daily level: since they are governed by Auri and Luni, respectively, their pettiness and follies come into account. On one day, the sun might rise even two hours later than expected, haste through the sky, and set after a scant eight hours. The days even out on greater levels, however, in that a week lasts almost exactly as long every time and a month even more precisely so. Perhaps the gods are of some use, after all.
A Pansearian hour is 60 minutes long, a day roughly 24 hours long, a week 7 days long, a month 25 days long and a year 12 months (= 300 days) long. For whatever reason, Auri wanes (orbits the continent farther than usual) four months every year, and ascends (orbits the continent closer than usual) four months every year, creating a four-month warm season (called summer, nighsummer or just nigh) and a four-month cold season (called winter, farwinter or just far), although the seasons are not very extreme. The two two-month seasons between summer and winter are called midseasons, and since new year begins at the middle point of winter, the midseasons are called prime and terminal, respectively.
Since this calendar and count of years is a newer invention, there are few holidays or festivals associated with it. People in the western lands traditionally celebrate midsummer and terminal midseason (time of harvest), while eastern folk celebrate midwinter (lowest temperature in the year).
Historical timeline, or the Reckoning
Another invention of the mysterious M. that was quickly adapted around Pansaer was a historical timeline, meticulously collected from a plethora of sources and more accurate than the simple, local histories of specific cities and kingdoms. The timeline is officially called the Reckoning, a name not suggested by M. originally but rather adapted somewhere along the way.
Years 0-500 - The Forging-Anew and Counting Years
The timeline begins with the defeat of the lesser gods and the wholesale destruction of the continent by Auri and his pantheon, which led to the gods reforging the world. How M. arrived at this exact year is unknown. This year began the Counting Years era, during which the world was given the form we see today.
Year 0: Lesser gods defeated, Pansaer created
Year 54: Caragos Eavorn created by series of titan-initiated earthquakes
Years 420-480: First trees of the great forests Ghaer and Dunas planted
Years 500-2000 - The Conquering Years
This is the high point of the mortal races, a legendary age of prosperity that folk long to and folklore speaks of with high regard. It is likely heavily romanticized, since according to M. it was also an age of conquest and of great wars between the young races. Thus, the age is called the Conquering Years.
Year 860: The dwarven gates of Caragos Eavorn forged
Year 882: Tumbling Fells inhabited by giants, gain nickname "Troll Country"
est. Years 1012-1060: Construction of Illusk, height of human power in north
Year 1224: Human nomads arrive at Carag Brun
Years 1807-1954: Construction and golden days of the Worldspine
est. Years 1960-1980: Ghaer darkens
Years 2000-2650 - The Journeying Years
During this time period the races began to migrate over the continent. Up until this point, the races had stayed close to their origins: humans in the northern and western plains, dwarves and goblins in the Caragos Eavorn, dunners in Ghaer and goliaths in the Fells. It was during these Journeying Years that the southern islands were inhabited and the western and eastern kingdom began to form as separate entities.
Year 2010: Illusk razed!
Year 2110: The founding of Marid'Arn, southern islands inhabited
Years 2110-2239: The Isle Days, human power at peak
Years 2601-2605: Carag Vorn and Carag Maragos linked with tunnels, dwarven empire grows in power
est. Year 2608: Tull established
Years 2650-2900 - The Troubled Years
War was everyday in the Troubled Years. |
The moniker of the Troubled Years is a massive understatement: historical records speak of a horrible time, where death was everyday and the gods even more spiteful than usual. From these days onwards, the titan-gods (up until now fairly indifferent to mortals) begin to antagonize the world on purpose.
Years 2660-2716: The Arn-Wars are fought over control of Marid'Arn
Year 2718: Fort Brunid established, Parcel Brunhelm (hero of Arn-Wars) declared king in west
Year 2817: Great bridge of Tull built
Year 2830: Dharuum established, wars in Remoras commence and continue to this day
Years 2900 onwards - The Golden Years
This era, the Golden Years, is the current age in Pansaer. The name is ironic: after the Troubled Years, rule of the king began to wane as corrupt nobles and merchants began vying for power. The world is at an uneasy standstill, what with the wounds of the recent wars still in fresh memory. The world is fragmented, and it will take great people to bring it together again.
Year 2935: Observatory of Irid established
Year 3092: Brimhaven established by sailors
Year 3152: Eric Brunhelm (born 3118) becomes king, western kingdoms weaken
Year 3204: The Long Year, followed by the Harsh Winter
Year 3227: Current year
