Hendyn (3.5e Race)
Hendyn
Many seek immortality, few find it. Most have to settle for undeath or some other process that defies death. But the Hendyn that are occasionally born to human lines never seek immortality. It is their birth right.
Very rarely (less than once a human generation) a nation may give birth to a son or daughter that has a very special gift, or curse. Eternal life (and youth). Hendyn are born to human parents and most go undetected until they reach about 40, at which point the fact that they haven't aged since reaching about 25 becomes very apparent. None know what causes this to occur, although many speculate it could be some form of planetouched factor, Hendyn can mate with humans and the children of such a union are perfectly normal humans. They do not even breed true with another Hendyn. There is no family that shows any inclination toward such births, in fact written records seldom go back far enough to record a second. There is no way short of divination magic such as commune of telling a human from a Hendyn.
Personality-wise, Hendyn are very much like normal humans in their early years, but later the toil of the years begins to show. Very old Hendyn are often withdrawn and bitter, having lost far too many old friends and companions to desire others. As far as motivations and alignment go they tend to be the same as humans in early years, but after eons of living, they acquire a special compassion and reverence for life and become some type of good alignment.
Although it rarely comes up the plural of Hendyn is Hendyn, much like sheep.
Note
Hendyn, along with Aanan, Gronfrox and Norkton are known as Inhumans. They are a group of human subraces with varied abilities but who seem to stem from the same source.
Personality
Younger Hendyn behave like normal humans. It is only with age that they become how most Henyn are remembered: grim, bitter, introverted and often humble. Having seen far too many people, and in the case of some too many civilizations, wither and die, they are reluctant to get involved with the "young folk".
Physical Description
Only Divination magic can reveal that a Hendyn is not a human.
Relations
Young Hendyn spend most of their time with humans. Those who are older often travel to the lands of Dwarves or Elves where their age and experience is respected. However they eventually seek out only the company of other immortals, in the hope that they will never have to seen another old friend die.
Alignment
Older Hendyn tend to develop lawful traits as the habits of the millennia roll on and on.
Lands
There are few places which Hendyn call their own. Any who own human lands are usually forced to "officially die" so that others can inherit. Their are however a few isolated villages where only Hendyn and the occasional human born of the Hendyn live. These places attract the truly old and reclusive Hendyn who have grown truly tired of the world. They tend to be hard to reach to discourage visitors.
Religion
No real patterns, although a race that doesn't die of age can find religion frustrating.
Language
Hendyn speak the languages of the humans.
Names
Hendyn are named as humans.
