Half-Giant, Athasian

Athasian half-giants are nasty, brutish, and tall. Very tall. They were bred by magic in an ancient war that ravaged the world of Athas and left it a scorched desert. None remember the details of the origins today, but all fear the rage of an angry half-giant.

History

Half-Giants were made by fel sorcery in the ancient past. Their origins are only dimly remembered. But their immense size and strength are lost on no one. They have served as shock troops and body guards to the rich and powerful for millenia. The infamous tyrant Kalak, sorceror-king of Tyr, keeps a legion of half-giants armed with iron-tipped spears and steel swords.

Society

Half-giants have no culture of their own. Combined with their typically weak mental ability, this causes them great insecurity. Half-giants therefore have become consummate imitators. They carefully observe charismatic individuals, such as a war leader, or successful neighbors, such as a village of dwarves, and imitate their behavior. Half-giants are mercurial, though, and often change role models suddenly.

Half-Giant Names

Half-giants have no culture of their own, and so use names from whatever society they find themselves in. Typically these are human names, but not always.

Half-Giant Traits

Brutish, mercurial giants from the burnt world of Athas.
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2 and your Constitution score increases by 1.
Age. Half-giants grow and age very slowly. You are considered an adult at age 25, and you can live to over 200 years old.
Alignment. Half-giants are famous for their mercurial personalities and values. Part of their alignment remains fixed, while the other can vary. Choose one part of your alignment, for example lawful or evil. If you are neutral, choose neutrality regarding law and chaos or neutrality regarding good and evil. That part of your alignment remains fixed, while the other part varies. For example, a neutral evil half-giant might choose neutral to remain fixed, and his alignment would fluctuate between neutral good, neutral, and neutral evil. See the Imitator racial trait below for more information.
Size. Half-giants tower over smaller races. You stand between 8 and 9 feet tall and weigh between 280 and 340 pounds. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Natural Athlete. You have proficiency in the Athletics skill.
Giant's Endurance. You can focus yourself to occasionally shrug off injury. When you take damage, you can use your reaction to roll a dl2. Add your Constitution modifier to the number rolled, and reduce the damage by that total. After you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Giant Ancestry. You count as a Giant for any game effects specifically affecting Giants.
Imitator. You have no culture of your own, so you imitate those around you. Everytime you finish a long rest, you can choose a character or group as your role model. Role models will typically be neighboring villages or tribes or charismatic individuals. You attempt to be like your role model. When you take a long rest, you can change the variable aspect of your alignment to match that aspect of your role model’s alignment. Also, choose one tool or skill proficiency your role model uses to meet its basic survival needs. It might be Survival for hunting and foraging, or mason’s tools for stone carvers. You gain proficiency in that tool or skill. If you are ever away from your role model for more than a week, you must chose a new role model.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Giant.
