This page is of questionable balance. Reason: Has druid as favored class, but then takes a bunch of druid features, so it actually combines poorly. Beast form needs to follow the standards for alternate form. Probably needs an LA.

Coppice Guldarine

See Guldarine (3.5e Race).

These tiny forest dwelling creatures are largely unknown to the world. They are very secretive and tend to use various charms and illusions to make creatures disinclined to go nearer or to just see regular trees instead of the creatures' tree homes. Completely non-aggressive, they will almost always run or compel rather than fight. They tend not to have a singular coppice in charge, instead revering nature and indulging their childlike whims.

Like all but burghal guldarine, coppice have a 'beast' form, that they can access quite often. Each individual can turn into only one creature, but the list for coppice is as follows:

  • A frog or toad-like animal
  • Any sauropod - long necked dinosaurs
  • Most kinds of reptiles:
  • Lizards in the Lacertilia order
  • Turtles, tortoises, terrapins
  • Snakes
  • Animals in the family Sciuridae - squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, etc

All coppice beast forms have plant-y attributes, like flowers growing on them, bark-like scales, some grass or moss growing on them, etc. Think grass type Pokemon. These can be from 1'4" to 7'3" tall (or long) and weigh 10-480 lbs.

Personality

As iterated, coppice are very shy critters, avoiding contact and especially conflict with other sentient creatures. They will rarely do anything to defend other creatures in their home, or even another of their kind, except in the case of the forest itself, namely the trees. Even rivals will band together to save these things that are sacred to them. There is always one special tree in their grove that is their guide, where they pray and set altars and offerings, and will die to defend. Sometimes this tree is alive, and will communicate with the coppice, but many a time it will simply be an unemotional tree. It has been known for them to worship dryads on occasion as well. All coppice are vegetarians.

Another part of the coppice is their childish demeanor. This can manifest in two ways, and often both: the first is a stereotypical whimsical love for play and no responsibilities, and being quite dependent, on the guardian tree instead of parents. This will usually be shown only to one who somehow proves his mettle or gains their trust; The other is a creepy fascination with outsiders and the unknown, and often strangers who are able to interact with them (in their home or meeting an adventurer) feel rather uncomfortable around them. This latter group is usually the ones to leave their forest homes to travel the world. Part of this attitude is the fact that once a child grows old enough to do things by itself, the parents treat it like any other member, though with a bit more favor.

All coppice have a love for music-making objects, the vast majority favoring wind instruments. One will often hear the distant whistle of a flute when near a coppice grove, often a tune of misdirection. These guldarine sleep for about two hours at dawn, and another two at dusk. This fulfills the need for a full night's sleep - if they get a full two hours in the morning, they can function all day, and if they get two in the evening, they can function all night.

Pups don't learn very fast intellectually, but their physical abilities are quick to form. They can climb trees and swing in branches at an early age, often before they have said their first word.

Physical Description

What sets this subrace apart the most is their miniscule stature. Growing between two and four feet, along with their woodsy colors, they are easy to look over when traveling through the forest. They can have any color and hue in existence, though usually not neon, as that would not hide them very well in their natural territories. The most common colors are green and brown, often with blue, pink, or yellow markings. Certain coppice, if they have gotten close enough to nature (usually by becoming a druid or other all-natural class or template), will grow flowers in their hair, or obtain some other plantlike aspect, like needing only water and sunlight to live, and even healing in strong sunlight. All coppice do not physically age, so one can never be certain how old a coppice one meets is, as well as they don't have the penalties as they get older. These guldarine smell like various flowers.

Pups are born with simpler versions of the markings they'll have when they are older. Eggs are any shade of brown or green, are somewhat squishy, and are very soft, yet a bit waxy, to the touch, as though touching flower petals. They can be kept at any humidity, as long as they are warm at around 52-93 degrees F.

Relations

Most coppice, being the timid race they are, don't particularly get along with other creatures. They do love and revere ones that are plant-y, such as dryads, as long as they're nice. Otherwise they will avoid them like any other race. The few that are more outgoing typically count gnomes and many fey among their friends as well. Most think other races are too snobby, too boring, too mean and angry, etc.

Alignment

They are typically true neutral, caring mostly about themselves and their guardian tree.

Lands

Any land, flat or hilly, with an abundance of trees.

Religion

Their veneration centers around their protector, whatever certain tree has somehow gained their reverence. They frequently give offerings such as food, plants (still in soil so they're able to grow), fresh water, certain small insects, spiders, or animals, and sometimes jewelry or raw ores found on the surface, in hopes of being gifted with a piece of knowledge or favor from the tree. It is the most important thing in a sedentary coppice's life.

Language

They speak Guldine almost exclusively. The ones who wish to travel will of course learn Common, and some like to learn Gnome, Sylvan, or Elven.

Names

Coppice rarely name their children, but rather allow them the opportunity to do it themselves when they get older. These names are typically of plants or animals.

I apologize, I do not understand the weight part. Both genders weigh between five and 60 lbs. They are a very lightweight species.
