A floating lantern is a relatively cheap yet reliable magical item to make for a low-level mage. When completed it steadily hovers around the user at a distance of no more than 60 ft. and moves at a speed of 30 ft. per round. With a conscious thought the user can toggle the lantern on or off and can even command it mentally to dim its light if they so desire. Additionally the floating lantern can be commanded to repeatedly close and reopen its shutter over and over to send a signal. The user need only tell it verbally the message they wish for it to transmit.

The floating lantern can shine its light for a total period of 24 hours before automatically shutting off for 30 minutes to recharge. If the floating lantern is turned off for 30 minutes prior to being used for 24 hours then it counts as a recharge. When active, it can shine a bright 120 ft. long by 30 ft. wide cone of light through its lens that emits a 240 ft. long by 60 ft. wide cone of dim light around it. The floating lantern will shine its light wherever its user wills it to and can be ordered to float to specific points within a 60 ft. radius around the user.

If grabbed, a floating lantern is considered to have a Strength equal to that of its user for the purposes of resisting.

Before a floating lantern can be used, it needs to attune to its user for a period of 1 hour. The potential user need only carry the lantern during this period in order to suffice. For more details see Table:Floating Lantern.
