Fairy Prince/Princess

Once upon a time, a charming young hero set out in search of love and happiness. They made all sorts of friends along the way, fought evil, and preferred to express their feelings by bursting into song. Their deepest desire is to live happily ever after. After a lifetime of adventuring experience, they usually become supernatural nannies or caretakers of nature, making the world a better place in their own magical, musical way. Their Very Best Friend is usually a small animal that has been with them as long as they can remember.

Making a Fairy Prince or Fairy Princess

(Any reference to "Fairy Prince" or "Fairy Princess" below refers to both, regardless of the character's gender.)

Fairy Princesses generally get along very well with other heroes, and may accidentally become the party leader by virtue of being universally loved. They typically have variety of skills, showing their best side in social situations and when exploring the wilds of nature. Their spells are versatile and useful, although their selection of spells is too narrow to replace a primary spellcaster. In combat, they do best when buffing their allies and debuffing their enemies by magic, as they prefer not to fight with weapons.

Abilities: All the Fairy Prince's class abilities are Charisma-based, making this his most important attribute. His Dexterity and Constitution will help him in battle, and his Wisdom and Intelligence contribute to many of his class skills.

Races: The traditional Fairy Princess is a Half-Elf or Human, but a person of any race could choose to take this class.

Alignment: Any nonlawful.

Class Features

<-fluff about class features->. All of the following are class features of the Fairy Prince.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Fairy Princesses are proficent with simple weapons, but no armor or shields.

Spells: The Fairy Prince is a Charisma-based, spontaneous arcane spellcaster. For spell levels 1 through 4, the Fairy Prince learns all of his spells but one from the Bard spell list. The other spell at each spell level must come from the Druid spell list. When choosing his own 5th-level spells known, the Fairy Prince may choose a spell from both Druid spell levels 5 and 6. When choosing his own 6th-level spells known, the Fairy Prince may choose a spell from both Druid spell levels 7 and 8. This means that his 5th and 6th spells known lists will have two Druid spells each.

AC Bonus (Ex): Rather than using armor, Fairy Princesses rely on their force of personality to protect themselves (generally, in a rather unassuming way). They add their Charisma bonus to their AC as an untyped bonus that they retain under all circumstances, even against touch attacks or when flatfooted. This bonus increases by one for every five class levels. In addition, even the most dastardly of villains are reluctant to kill a Fairy Princess; to deliberately kill a Fairy Princess, the attacker must make a Will save, DC 10 + the Fairy Princess's class level + her Charisma modifier. (For this reason, many villains with a grudge against such a character specialize in nonlethal forms of attack.)

Animal Friend: At level 1, Fairy Princes may choose gain a familiar, which progresses as a Sorcerer of their class level; or, they may choose to gain an animal companion, which progresses as a Druid of half their class level. If their animal friend is lost or takes enough damage that it would normally be killed, it disappears and finds the player 24 hours later, with a tale of a miraculous escape. Once a Fairy Prince has chosen his animal friend, he may not change it.

Social Skill Affinity: At level 2, Fairy Princesses gain a +1 bonus to all Bluff, Diplomacy, Gather Information, Intimidate, and Perform checks. When interacting with Fey, the bonus is doubled. Every 5 levels after 2nd level, this bonus increases by 1.

Wild Empathy (Ex): At level 3, the Fairy Prince gains Wild Empathy as a Druid.

Woodland Stride (Ex): Beginning at level 5, the Fairy Prince gains Woodland Stride as a Druid.

Fascinate/Suggestion/Mass Suggestion (Sp): At 6th level, the Fairy Princess gains Fascinate as a Bard. At 11th level, she gains Suggestion, and at 18th level, she gains Mass Suggestion, except that a Fairy Princess can use Mass Suggestion with only 20 ranks in a Perform skill.

Fey Magic (Ex): At level 8, the DC of the Fairy Prince's enchantment spells rises by 1, and he gains a +1 bonus to overcome spell resistance when casting enchantments. This bonus increases by 1 for every 6 levels beyond 8th.

Fey Vision (Ex): At level 10, the Fairy Princess gains low-light vision and can always see the auras of enchantment and illusion spells, as if using Detect Magic. At level 15, she can always see the auras of all spells.

Ex-Fairy Princes/Princesses

A Fairy Prince who becomes lawful in alignment cannot progress in levels as a fairy prince/princess, though he retains all his fairy prince/princess abilities.

Playing a Fairy Prince

Religion: Members of this class tend to gravitate towards gods and religions that revere nature, love, happiness, and destiny.

Other Classes: Other adventurers tend to rely on the Fairy Prince in social situations, and naturally try to protect him in combat. Rogues, fighters, and even barbarians are easily charmed by the Fairy Prince's sincere friendliness; only druids tend to hold themselves aloof from them.

Combat: Fairy Princes enchant their enemies and strengthen their friends in combat. When forced to fight alone, they often summon monsters or animal allies to protect them.

Advancement: Fairy Princes make decent Thaumaturgists and Shadowdancers. Some multiclass into Ranger, Rogue, or Fighter to improve their fighting prowess. However, many Fairy Princes advance to level 20 in their own class, gaining ever-greater powers from their connection to the world of the Fey. Other classes could take a one-level dip in Fairy Prince to apply their Charisma to AC, at the cost of needing a high Charisma and a level of BAB.

Fairy Princesses in the World

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
—Mary Poppins, Human Fairy Princess

Fairy Princesses bring life everywhere they go, infusing joy into festivals and weddings and everyday events. Their magic is both natural and odd: those affected by it embrace the effects, but afterward, they may comment on the strangeness of it all. Fairy Princesses generally use their powers as part of grand stories and adventures; in everyday life, they may be unusually whimsical or perky, but they do not generally flaunt their magic unless it is really needed.

Daily Life: I played with my pet squirrel, searched for my one true love, and almost got poisoned by an evil queen!

Notables: Princess Giselle of Andalasia, Snow White, Rapunzel.

Organizations: N/A

NPC Reactions: Oh my goodness! I love this person! I should sing along with them about my feelings--I know just what they're talking about! ... Wait, what just happened?

Fairy Prince/Princess Lore

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Nature) can research Fairy Princes and Princesses to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (Nature)
DCResult
5There are stories of spellcasters with a strange connection to nature and animals.
10Some arcane spellcasters gain their strength not from study, song, or sorcery, but from a connection to nature. They are usually friendly and a little wild.
15While most magical bloodlines lead to sorcery, a fey bloodline sometimes creates a person who surrounds themselves with animals, happiness, and love. Many stories surround them, and they are known to cast strong enchantments.
20Powerful Fairy Princes and Princesses can see the magic in the world around them, literally and figuratively.

Fairy Princes/Princesses in the Game

<-How characters of this class fit in the game (PC and NPC) and what roles they play.->

Adaptations:

  • Soft-Hearted Hero: Give up spellcasting and Fey Magic. Instead, gain 3/4 BAB progression, proficiency in light armor, and proficiency in all martial weapons.
  • Mystic Conjurer: The character loses their Social Skill Affinity and gains the following feats, at levels 2, 7, and 12: Spell Focus (Conjuration), Augment Summoning, and Extend Spell.
  • Gestalt Druid-Bard: Instead of using the stats above, play a Gestalt game with Druid and Bard as your classes of choice.

Sample Encounter: A Fairy Prince/Princess could serve as a mentor to the characters, a benevolent ruler, or a kind rescuer when they are lost in a forest. To turn the trope on its head, a GM could create a Chaotic Neutral antagonist of this class: someone who is difficult to kill, wields strange magics, and whose animal friend saves them from danger at the most annoying possible moment.
