Elemental Summoner

I am one with the elements.

Given the power to summon fearsome elementals, and eventually bond with them, the Elemental Summoner specializes in conjuration and elemental magic.

Your Red Wizards think themselves fierce, the Thaurmaturgists believe they know it all when it comes to summoning. But the Elemental Summoner reaches into the Elemental Planes and calls forth fearsome and terrifying elementals to fight alongside them. From the smallest, friendliest water elemental to be a familiar up to the largest and most powerful of earth elementals to crush their enemies, the Elemental Summoner trades with them all.

Becoming a Elemental Summoner

Most characters that will follow the path of the Elemental Summoner are conjurers, wizards and sorcerers are chief amongst them, followed by the occasional druid, although anyone with the ability to summon elementals to their side may be able to follow this path.

Class Features

Bonus Spells Beginning at 3rd level, the Elemental Summoner gains a number of bonus spells as seen on the chart above to be used for Summon spells. Furthermore, beginning at 1st all Summon spells that the Elemental Summoner casts, including spells not cast with bonus spells, must be to summon an elemental or mephit.

Enhanced Specialisation (Conjured) Upon becoming an Elemental Summoner, the character increases their devotion to conjuration, choosing another school that they are prohibited from casting. If the character was a wizard before this, this stacks on top of the schools they are already prohibited from, but they may not choose the same school twice. They may cast spells they already know from this new prohibited school, but not learn any more. For Example, Mialee knows two Abjuration spells before becoming an Elemental Summoner and has chosen Abjuration as her new prohibition. She may still cast the spells she knows, but never learn new ones of that school.

Augmented Summoning An Elemental Summoner gains the Augmented Summoning feat (Players Handbook, page 89).

Swap Familiars As a standard action, an Elemental Summoner dismiss a familiar that they already know for a different one that they are able to summon. For example, Mialee started her journey with a toad but at second level she will learn to summon a small earth elemental. She may swap between these two familiars as a standard action, to allow her to get the best out of the situation. Only one familiar's given abilities may be active on the Elemental Summoner at one time. She cannot, for example, have the toad's bonus to her hit points when she is using her earth elemental, and will consequently lose those hit points until she re-summons her toad to her side.

Specialist Defence (Conjured) An Elemental Summoner gains a bonus on saving throws against Conjuration spells.

Summon Elemental Familiar Beginning at 2nd level an Elemental Summoner can start to summon small elementals as familiars (DMG page 202), beginning with a small water elemental and progressing through levels to a small fire elemental.

Advanced Summoning Beginning at 3rd whenever you cast a Summon spell, you may treat it as being cast one level higher. For example, if Mialee casts a Summon Monster IV, she may then choose one creature from the Summon Monster V list.

Improved Ally Elementals you summon come to you with maximum possible hit points. For example, when you summon a medium Fire Elemental, instead of summoning it with the standard 26 hit points (4d8), it will start with a full 32. This ability does not transfer to the Conjured Cohort ability the Elemental Summoner gains in later levels.

Mastery of Elements The Elemental Summoner can alter an arcane spell when cast so that it utilises a different element from the one it normally uses. For example, when an Elemental Summoner casts Fireball, she can make it do cold damage instead of fire. This ability may only be used on Conjuration spells with the Acid, Cold, Electric, or Fire descriptors and may only be used to change their types to these descriptors.

Extended Summoning At 7th level, all Summon spells the Elemental Summoner casts have their durations doubled, as if by the Extend Spell feat. The level of the spell does not change however. This ability stacks with the Extend Spell feat.

Contingent Summoning Beginning at 9th level, an Elemental Summoner pre-prepare a summoning or calling spell ahead of time, to be triggered by some other event. This functions as the Contingency spell, including having the Elemental Summoner cast the spell beforehand. The spell instantly casts when the trigger event occurs. For example, Mialee could use Contingent Summoning to prepare an Earth Elemental (Huge) for the next time she is attacked or an Air Elemental (Medium) if she needs to send an urgent message. The conditions for the contingency trigger must be clear but can be general. If the trigger is complicated or convoluted, the Contingent Summoning may fail. The conjuration spell occurs based solely on the stated conditions, regardless of what the Elemental Summoner wants it to, although it can be dismissed as though a normal conjuration. An Elemental Summoner can only have Contingent Summoning in place at a time.

Conjured Cohort At 10th level, the Elemental Summoner can summon any elemental to be their cohort. The summoned elemental serves loyally as long as it is not forced into an environment of it it's opposite. For example, a summoned Earth Elemental will leave if taken onto the Elemental Plane of Air or onto an airship, an Air Elemental will leave when taken to the Elemental Plane of Earth or underground, a Fire Elemental when taken to the Elemental Plane of Water or into a large body of water (such as lake or ocean), and a Water Elemental when taken to the Elemental Plane of Fire or into a strongly heated environment (such as underneath a volcano). To summon a Conjured Cohort, the Elemental Summoner must cast the relevant spell, paying XP costs normally, and make an offering of 1000gpXthe hit dice of the elemental summoned. The elemental summoned cannot have more hit dice than that of the Elemental Summoner summoning it. For example, Mialee is ECL 15 (5 levels of Wizard, 10 levels of Elemental Summoner), giving her 15HD, meaning she could summon a Large Elemental (with hit dice of 8 and no level adjustment) to be her cohort, but she would have to wait one more level before being able to summon Huge elemental cohorts (hit dice of 16).
