Dragoon, Balanced

It is nothing to jump, but it is something to make use of the fall.
—Brom Hughes, Human Dragoon

Dragoons are special knights that use Spears and other reach weapons to make powerful attacks by jumping into the air and allowing gravity to take hold to deal devastating damage.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Dragoon.

Jump (Ex): Beginning at 1st Level and every odd level thereafter (1,3,5,7,9) a Dragoon increases the distance away from himself that he may make a jump attack by 10 feet. A Dragoon's jump attack is a full round action that deals damage in the form of 1d6 per 10 feet of distance that he achieves on a jump check added onto a standard attack (Ex. a Dragoon that achieves a jump check of 30 deals an extra 3d6 on top of his normal weapon damage). The Dragoon lands in an open square nearest to the opponent that he targeted. This movement does not generate attacks of opportunity.

High Flier (Ex): A Dragoon takes no fall damage from any distance so long as the Dragoon jumped deliberately; he takes fall damage normally if he falls any other way. When a Dragoon uses the jump skill his jumps are treated as if he had a running start, the formula for determining vertical jump height is the same as for horizontal jump height (one foot per point on the check), and he may add his Dragoon class level to the result of the check.

Spear Mastery (Ex): A Dragoon may attack and threaten squares inside his reach with a piercing reach weapon or spear as if it wasn't a reach weapon.

Dragon's Fang (Ex): If a Dragoon strikes an adjacent foe with a melee attack using a reach weapon he may attempt to strike foes directly behind that foe, as long as the target is within weapon reach, using the same attack roll with a -5 penalty for each opponent between the Dragoon and the target.

Dragon's Roar (Su): Dragoons gain a 30ft. cone breath attack dealing 1d10 per two Dragoon class levels, force damage. Creatures may attempt a reflex save of DC 10 + 1/2 Dragoon Class Level + Con Modifier to take half damage. A Dragoon may use this ability once every two Dragoon Class Levels + Con Modifier times.

Lancet (Ex): Dragoons may use this ability when making a standard melee attack or charge against a living target with a piercing weapon. This attack deals an additional 1d6 per two Dragoon Class Levels to the target and heals the Dragoon by the same amount as the bonus damage. This ability takes a full round action.

Dragon Dive (Su): A Dragoon may make a jump attack that deals its damage in a 15 foot radius around the target. Do not make a standard attack on the target as in a normal jump attack. Only the damage from the jump check is applied. Creatures may attempt a reflex save of DC 10 + Dragoon Class Level + Con Modifier to take half damage. The Dragoon is immune to the damage of his own Dragon Dive.

Dragon Heart (Ex): When a Dragoon falls to 0 hit points or lower, but is not killed, he may regain 1d6 HP per Dragoon class level as an immediate action and become Exhausted. A Dragoon cannot use Dragon Heart if he is already Exhausted.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Epic Dragoon.

Improved Jump (Ex): On odd levels an Epic Dragoon increases the range of his jump attack by 20 feet instead of 10 feet. When making a jump attack an Epic Dragoon adds 1d6 per 5 feet achieved by his jump check instead of 1d6 per 10 feet. After completing a jump attack an Epic Dragoon may move up to half his speed from where he lands. This additional movement after the jump attack generates attacks of opportunity as normal.

Improved High Flier (Ex): An Epic Dragoon adds twice his class level to the result of jump checks instead of his class level. For every two ranks an Epic Dragoon has in jump he may add 1 to the result of his jump checks (in addition to the normal skill modifier these ranks grant).

Dragon's Roar (Su): An Epic Dragoon uses his class level to calculate his breath attack's damage and reflex save, as normal.

Greater Dragon's Roar (Su): The Epic Dragoon's breath attack becomes a 60ft. cone or a 120ft. line, chosen upon use. This attack deals 1d8 force damage per class level instead of 1d10 per two class levels. Creatures may attempt a reflex save of DC 10 + Dragoon Class Level + Con Modifier to take half damage instead of a reflex save of DC 10 + 1/2 Dragoon Class Level + Con Modifier.

Lancet (Ex): An Epic Dragoon uses his class level to calculate Lancet damage and healing, as normal.

Dragon Dive (Su): An Epic Dragoon uses his class level to calculate Dragon Dive's reflex save, as normal.

Greater Dragon Dive (Su): As Dragon Dive, but the Dragoon deals damage in a 30 foot radius around the target rather than a 15 foot radius. Additionally, the Dragoon makes one attack roll at his highest bonus and uses it to make a standard attack against every creature in the radius. These attacks are not subject to the reflex save. The Dragoon is immune to the damage of his own Greater Dragon Dive.

Greater Dragon Heart (Ex): When a Dragoon sustains damage that would otherwise kill him he may make a DC 15 Fortitude save to instead take half the damage he would normally take from this source as long as he is not already dying. When a Dragoon activates Dragon Heart he becomes Fatigued rather than Exhausted. This does not prevent an already Fatigued Dragoon becoming Exhausted.

Bonus Feats: The epic Dragoon gains a bonus feat (selected from the list of epic Dragoon feats) every 5 levels after 10th.

Epic Dragoon Bonus Feat List: Armor Skin, Blinding Speed, Damage Reduction, Devastating Critical, Energy Resistance, Epic Endurance, Epic Prowess, Epic Reputation, Epic Speed, Epic Toughness, Epic Weapon Focus, Fast Healing, Legendary Tracker, Overwhelming Critical, Penetrate Damage Reduction, Perfect Health, Superior Initiative.
