Dragonbeast

Dem' beasts make it hard 'nough ter'git anywhere... Now 'magine draguns...

Physical Description

From The Life and Times of Juniper Lee by Cartoon Network

The traditional dragonbeast resembled a malformed reptilian or dragon with some mammalian aspects. Most appear to be a mash of mammals, resulting in a general chimerical form. All dragonbeasts have a thick fur coat of some kind over their bodies. This coat recedes in certain areas to reveal scales. Most dragonbeasts have some form of tusk or horns on their heads. Many have this hidden in a mane of spiny fur and also have a great maw of razor sharp teeth. They are known to possess the organ which allows for dragon breath, though this has mainly been seen as one of fire. They are very much like maddened beasts, with fiery eyes and powerful bodies. While they range in hues of color, most stay a base of browns to reds.

History

All dragonbeasts in general are believed to be a result of a phenomena known as dracofication. Supposedly, following the waning power during the Time of Dragons and the rise of the Untheric empire, Tiamat was raising horrid spawn in her battles against Bahamut. Among these activities, her followers sought to keep their faith amid the apathy towards the draconic gods. They wanted to aid her in her battle, and so tried to replicate the spawning process. Their methods used other creatures as bases for draconification, which imbued powers and properties of dragons into them. What made this truly a horrible act was that the essence they imbued these creatures with was that of the chaotic Tiamat herself. Thus, many of these creatures could not live through the process and degenerated.

Most dragonbeasts that survived lost most of the qualities of their original form. Creatures too small to survive were overwhelmed by the methods and died, while others became chimeric beings. The polar dragonbeast is believed to have been too distinct from regular dragonbeasts, as it mainly retained its original form, and was one embodying ice and water rather than fire. Other dragonbeasts remained largely of the land variety, and their changes rendered them looking like monstrous hybrids of multiple creatures.

Society

Dragonbeasts behave as they are, beasts. Imbued with the mercurial temperament of dragons has not alleviated this, though it has given them some intelligence. They remain a rather savage sight in the wild, where they live either as solitary hunters, or in packs. Dragonbeasts are known to be hostile to those who wander into their hunting routes. However, they are not without reason and usually can understand speech well enough. They just don't like to talk very much. In times when food is scarce, dragonbeasts can wander into towns to look for temporary employment for money. As such, people are aware of the social potential they have. They just seem to prefer not to use it.
