Dragon Empire (Endhaven Supplement)

Flag of the Dragon Empire.

About

The Dragon Empire arose from the Thuline Empire. It still survives today, although mostly in token form.

History

The Dragon Empire was passed to Doleman by his father, Thule. The Mother of Storms herself placed the great Dragon standard in his hands.

The Dragon Empire is one of three empires formed from the Thule Empire.

Thule's Empire did not survive his abdication. His sons quickly turned on each other, each desiring to win the entire empire for himself. A new era of civil war was born. Each son established a throne under his own flag. The Queen of Storms herself gave these symbols to each son. Doleman received the Dragon as his symbol, and he ruled from Charystos. Barrow received the Phoenix as his symbol. Cairne received the Griffon as his symbol, and he ruled from Fort Resolute.

Doleman fought endless wars with his brothers, each trying to establish their own grand empire.

Doleman and the Dragon Empire fought on the side of Law during the Wars of Law and Chaos.

The Dragon Empire collapsed in the years preceding the Psychotic Wars. Thelonius Sanjar, Captain of the Palace Guard, organized a coup against the Dragon Emperor. He attempted to storm the Palace of Eternity, but was unable to breach its walls.

The imperial fleets remained loyal to Doleman, retreating to Venalicium and defeating what few sea forces that Thelonius had remaining. Even as he built a new fleet and waged war against the Venalicium, the ruling junta collapsed, dragging the Dragon Empire into a deeper and more protracted civil war.

Thelonius negotiated for peace with Doleman. Thelonius relinquished all claims to the sea possessions of the Dragon Empire, along with all Dragon Imperial Palaces. In addition, he agreed to grant Venalicium irrevocable trade rights with all former Dragon Empire possessions. In return, Doleman recognized the Malachite Empire, agreed that Venalicium would hire its fleet to the Malachite Empire in return for 1,000 talents of gold paid annually to Venalicium and 500 talents of gold paid directly to the Dragon Emperor. Finally, the Dragon Emperor agreed to marry Nadira, the sister of Thelonius.

Following this treaty, Thelonius successfully faced down his remaining rivals. This peace did not come soon enough, for the Psychotic Assembly used this war to expand their own domain. This plunged the world into the last and most recent of the Wars of Law and Chaos.

The Wars of Law and Chaos changed Emperor Doleman. In many ways, losing his vast empire opened his eyes to his own blindness. During the war, he rediscovered his moral compass. This was hammered home as the Shadow Empire successfully split the Jade Necropolis away from Charystos. He could no longer ignore this organization. The last war was not over, and no one was left to fight it. He worked with others to reform the Golden Circle as the Alliance of the Sun and to establish a secret society called The Teachers. The Circle worked to resolve the wars of Law and Chaos. He donated his best defended palace to be the home of a school for those who strive to promote good.

The public itself does not know about The Teachers. Those who know of The Teachers do not know who belongs to that organization or where they work from. Even the Shadow Empire does not know the exact membership of the The Teachers, nor does The Teachers know who exactly the Skulls are. The Skulls currently believe that the Emperor Doleman is neutral in this conflict, as he historically been among the most vicious and immoral of combatants. His support of the Golden Circle is seen as an alliance of necessity.

The Palace of Eternity is still an independent state inside Charystos. The palace itself is a massive construct, half a kilometer on each side. Her population is approximately twenty thousand, mostly staff and guards. She operates in every as a state. Her estimated wealth stands at three hundred thousand talents of gold (or 3 million gold pieces in cash alone.) The Emperor himself also has wealth in the form of vast planes scattered across the Empire. The emperor kept control of his personal holdings. The prophesy kept most generals from daring to attack these palaces.

Dragon Empress Nadira is from the ruling Sanjar family. She is a maternal aunt of the Malachite Emperor. She dislikes each of the Malachite Empresses and quietly works to keep any from becoming too dominant. She works for the best interests of Charystos, rather than the best interests of herself. She has already picked out a competent son who should rise to the throne and she angles for that son to rise on his own merits.
