Class Features

Animal Companion

Upon becoming a 1st level Dog Trainer, you obtain a Medium Dog (pg 234 D20 Modern Core Rulebook), which is normal in most respects, except that it gains the abilities listed in the following table:

Table: Canine Companion
Level Strength Adjustment Natural Armor Bonus Bonus Hit Dice Bonus Tricks Special
1st-2nd+4+2+21Obedient, Evasion
3rd-4th+5+3+42Loyalty
5th-6th+6+4+63Rend
7th-8th+7+5+84Frightful Presence
9th-10th+8+6+105Improved Evasion

Obedient (Ex): A Dog Trainer can handle his Canine Companion as a free action or push it as a move action.

Evasion (Ex): If the Canine Companion makes a successful Reflex save against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful reflex save instead deals no damage. A Canine Companion does not benefit from this ability when it is denied its Dexterity bonus to Defence.

Loyalty (Ex): A Canine Companion is so completely loyal to its master that it gains a +4 bonus on Will saves.

Rend (Ex): When making a full-attack action, if at least 2 bite attacks hit the same target, that target takes an additional 1d6 points of damage. Creatures immune to critical hits are not subject to this extra damage.

Frightful Presence (Ex): As a free action, a Canine Companion can cause all foes within 10 feet who have fewer levels (Hit Dice) then the Canine Companion must succeed on a Will save (DC 10 + ½ Canine Companion’s Hit Dice + its Charisma modifier) or become shaken for a number of rounds equal to 1d6 + its Charisma modifier. A successful save indicates that the opponent is immune to the use of this feat for 24 hours. Creatures with an Intelligence score of 3 or less cannot be affected by this feat.

Improved Evasion (Ex): This functions just like Evasion, except even on a failed Reflex save, the Canine Companion only takes half damage from attacks that allow a Reflex save for half damage.

Animal Expert (Ex)

A Dog Trainer gets a bonus on all Handle Animal checks equal to the bonus given on the table. Also, this bonus applies to certain class features (see individual class features for more information).

Intimidating Hound (Ex)

Starting at 3rd level, a Dog Trainer gains a bonus on Intimidate checks equal to his Canine Companion's Hit Dice while his Canine Companion is within 10 feet of him. This bonus does not apply on any round where the Canine Companion is unconscious or otherwise unable to act.

Pack Hunter (Ex)

If a creature is occupying a square threatened by a Dog Trainers Canine Companion, the Dog Trainer gets a bonus on attack and damage rolls equal to his Animal Expert bonus. If a creature is occupying a square threatened by the Dog Trainer, the Canine Companion gets a bonus on attack and amage rolls equal to the Dog Trainer's Animal Expert bonus.

Canine First-Aid (Ex)

When using any aspect of the Treat Injury skill on your Canine Companion, or when using the Aid Another action on a character that is using the Treat Injury skill on your Canine Companion, the DC for all actions is reduced by the Dog Trainer’s Animal Expert bonus. Also, the Restore Hit Points and Surgery actions cure the standard amount of damage plus the Dog Trainers Animal Expert bonus per die (so a 7th level Dog Trainer using Restore Hit Points on his Canine Companion would heal 1d4+3 hit points. Using the Surgery action, he would restore 10d6+30 hit points).
