Disciple of Balance

A disciple of Balance is a worshiper of Garia and views balance as the highest ideal to strive for. He maintains balance by careful selection of spells and is rewarded for his dedication.

Making a Disciple of Balance

Disciples of Balance excel at causing harm to enemies and curing allies. However, their restrictions on casting and their limited list of spells makes them a less versatile caster. Any character who chooses to be a disciple of Balance must have a true neutral alignment and must also be a worshiper of Garia.

Races: Elves are most likely to become Disciples of Balance as their long lives gives them an appreciation for the value of balance. Humans, and Gnomes join as well but they are less likely. Dwarven and half-orc Disciples of Balance are few and far between.

Alignment: True neutral only.

Starting Age: As Cleric.

Class Features

Spellcasting A Disciple of Balance receives the spells from the cleric domains of Good, Evil, Law, and Chaos as the only spells he can cast. Like a sorcerer he may any spell he knows without preparing it ahead of time. In addition he keeps a divine scale with him that weighs his actions and alignment. Any spell cast moves the scale one step in the direction towards the alignment of the spell. A spell cast of the opposite alignment moves the scale back to center. The scale also changes color and brightness based on his balance. See lore below.

Maintain the Balance Starting at first level a Disciple of Balance's ideal keep him from casting spells that would disrupt the balance of the universe. As such a Disciple of balance cannot move more than one step on the scale in any direction without making an alignment check towards the alignment in question. If the he fails the alignment check his alignment changes from true neutral to that alignment, and his class as a Disciple of Balance, along with all of his class abilities and spellcasting.

Power of Balance A Disciple of balance realizes that with balance comes power. Starting at first level the Disciple of Balance receives a +1 to his caster level whenever he is within one step in any direction on the scale. This can be one step away from balanced on the goo/evil axis and one step away from balanced on the law/chaos axis so long as it is not 2 steps away on either axis. This bonus increases to +2 at level 9 and again to +3 at level 17.

Balance of life and death At second level, the Disciple of Balances studies life and death and discovers their impact on the overall balance. As such he may add the domain spells from healing, and destruction to his list of spells known. However, these spells impact the balance as following: every healing spell cast moves the disciple 1 step toward law and one step toward good. Every destruction spell cast moves the disciple one step toward chaos and one step toward evil.

Boundaries of Balance At level 3 a Disciple of Balance learns more of the boundaries keeping him balanced. As a result he can move farther on the scale without disrupting the balance. This ability gives the Disciple a balance a +1 to how many steps he can move towards any alignment on the scale before making an alignment check. This ability increases by another +1 at every four levels after third.

Balanced weapon At 4th level a Disciple of Balance's weapon becomes attuned to his scales. Anytime the Disciple of Balance is at least one step away from complete neutral on the scales, his weapons become aligned to the alignment he has stepped towards. For example if the Disciple of Balance casts a chaotic spell moving him off neutral towards chaotic then his weapon becomes chaotic aligned. This effect can apply to multiple alignments(chaotic & good) simultaneously giving the weapon both alignments, however it cannot apply to opposing alignment. If the Disciple of Balance is chaotic on the scale by one step and cast a lawful spell it will move him back to neutral and he will lose this bonus. Another lawful spell will make his weapon lawful aligned but it has already lost the chaotic alignment.

See Balance (Su) By fifth level a Disciple of Balance has become so attuned to the balance of things around him that as a supernatural effect he can see if characters or creatures around him are true neutral aligned or not. He cannot however determine anything else about their alignment from this ability. This is a passive ability that is always active.

Enforcer of Balance (Sp) At tenth level Garia begins to reward the Disciple of Balance for his dedication. Once per day as a full round action he can call on Garia's divine power to enforce the balance. All creatures that are not true neutral within 30 ft of character must make a fort save or take 1d6/level of untyped damage. All true neutral creatures are instead healed for the same amount. Power of balance bonus may apply to this ability. As it is untyped, Tipping the scales may not. At level 20 he can use this ability twice per day.

Tipping the scales At thirteenth level a Disciple of Balance's long dedication to the balance has revealed to him the lure of imbalance and the power that comes with it. As a result for every step that he is towards a certain alignment on the scales he gains caster level +1 when casting spells of that alignment. This ability stacks with power of balance when he is one step in a specific direction.

Greater See Balance By level 15 a Disciple of Balance becomes so familiar with the balance that he can now see any creatures alignment. This ability function exactly like See Balance except he can now determine a creatures exact alignment. For example Chaotic Nuetral or Lawful Good.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency:Disciples of Balance are proficient with all simple weapons, with all types of armor (light, medium, and heavy), and with shields (except tower shields).

Spells: Disciples of Balance cast divine spells. Their spells are manifestations of Garia's will so he need not prepare them ahead of time. He spontaneously casts spells like a sorcerer and chooses the best one to maintain balance in any given situation. Disciples of Balance know all the cleric domain spells of Good, Evil, Law, Chaos at level one and the spells from the Healing and Destruction domains at level 2. They do not however gain the special abilities associated with these domains.

Ex-Disciples of Balance

Any Disciple of Balance that becomes an alignment other than true neutral loses all of his class abilities, and all of his spell-casting ability gained from this class. If he later atones this and his alignment becomes true neutral once more he can regain these abilities and this class. See cleric atonement feature.

Disciple's of Balance in the World

Balance is not the art of doing nothing, it is the art of doing exactly the right number of actions so that you have added to this world only what you have taken away.
—Tomias Langolfod, Elven Disciple of Balance

Organizations: Disciples of Balance will often assemble in great orders dedicated to the Balance. These orders will go on long crusades healing and helping the sick while destroying those deemed as enemies.

NPC Reactions: NPC's that have been helped by a Disciple of Balance are generally grateful. Other NPCs generally react in fear or mistrust due to the disciples' harsh methods.

5Disciple of Balance are harsh clerics that create or destroy on a whim.
10Disciples of Balance are worshipers of Garia who believe that for every action, an opposite type of action should be made to maintain balance.
15Disciples of Balance carry a scale that they use to determine what action to take next.
20Their scale changes color based on their current balance. If the scale is bright they are good balanced and you can expect an evil action from them next. If it is dark they are evil balanced. Likewise, a gold scale means they are lawful balanced and a silver means they are chaotic balanced.
