Darkspear Troll (Warcraft) (3.5e Race)

Darkspear Trolls

An exotic breed of smaller troll was found by travelers in a land called Azeroth. These humanoids, once quite rare, now spread themselves throughout much of Oerth, and are slowly beginning to wind up even in different planes. Evolution has marked these creatures as a definite offset from any species known, and their existence is too recent for any meaningful research to be performed. Most will not share their past, but tales of those who did speak (and they only spoke very little) highlighted a 16,000-year history with "The Twin Empires", something called "The Burning Legion", and "Hakkar the Soulflayer". Much of this, however, is dismissed as rumor or lies from the darkspear trolls to quell the curiosity amongst other races.

Personality

The darkspear trolls are a strange race. Thought to be related to trolls or orcs (and possessing similar attributes from both), darkspear trolls certainly cannot be classified as either. Their culture favors the exotic, and many devote their lives to creating new potions, classes, or sometimes spells. Darkspear trolls are quite interested in material possessions, and find great sentimental value in small trinkets like beads or baubles. To them, gold, silver, and copper are not much more than shiny objects used for trade.

Physical Description

Trolls are usually bluish-green in skin color, noting ancestral trolls. However, some cultures favor a full blue skin tone, or even a purple one. Darkspear trolls stand approximately 7 feet high with large tusks (possibly an evolutionary exaggeration from the orc's two large canines, which may once have been useful in combat, but are now simply decorative (they are positioned and such an obtuse angle that use of them in battle is more or less impossible). Their bodies are somewhat slender, but well-muscled, regardless of gender. Some of their physical features represent elves, but this may be simply because of similar environmental pressures. One theory marks the connection between the evolutionary adaptability of elves and the wide variety of different physical appearances of darkspear trolls, showing that many years ago, trolls happened upon the first Moonwell, and its' magical properties mutated them into what we now know as night elves. Another interesting aspect about the darkspear troll is that they sleep with their eyes open. This does not affect their awareness at all, but affects them when they are exposed to light -- darkspear trolls that are sleeping or are rendered unconscious still can be hurt by bright lights (as noted in their racial traits).

Relations

Darkspear trolls and regular trolls do not get along well, and battles between the two have usually involved the former getting chased off or eaten. However, as darkspear trolls have quickly learned to ally themselves with other races, troll hunting parties have begun to form. These parties are groups of ten to twenty which go out and kill regular trolls in the areas most populated by them. Darkspear trolls are also on fine terms with dwarves and gnomes. However, darkspear trolls seem to despise all kinds of elves (including half-elves) and humans, a personality aspect that it appears is culturally influenced.

Alignment

Darkspear trolls are seperated (to out knowledge) on Oerth into two different cultures. They tend to stray more towards Lawful Evil or Chaotic Neutral than any other alignments, but some are found who follow Neutral Evil, Neutral, Chaotic Evil, and Lawful Neutral. On the other hand, it's more or less impossible to find darkspear trolls of good alignment. The only documentation of such darkspear trolls is in encounters where the darkspear troll has used a pretense of alignment to catch its targets off guard.

Darkspear Troll Lands

Darkspear trolls make a living out of any environment. There have been darkspear trolls recorded in the forests, arctic, desert, and sightings have suggested their presence in the Wastes of Nerull. Darkspear trolls who settle in human lands are commonly poor laborers who have been cast out of their own society and haven't been accepted by halflings or orcs (which could be for a variety of reasons, one of which being the fact that there just might not be any halflings or orcs around in the first place).

Religion

Religion isn't a big thing for darkspear trolls. Though they have temples and shrines dedicated to their deities, they do not make religion as important in their culture as other races. It is assumed that the darkspear trolls worshiped some separate deities back in their homeland. However, upon coming to Oerth, the darkspear trolls quickly realized that their deities were not responding. Those who do worship deities in this land are partial to deities of their own alignment, the most commonly worshiped among them being Kord, Vecna, and Hextor. But, as it is, darkspear trolls don't care that much for the religions on Oerth.

Language

Darkspear trolls speak Darkspear, a language based off of the language of Azeroth called labeled Warcrae (by inhabitants of Oerth). Due to their settling in uncivilized lands, they can learn communication with many of the inhabitants there. Some learn the languages of goblins, orcs, or the languages of their friends (half-orcs and halflings). The most common language of darkspear native to Oerth, next to Common, is Orc.

Racial Traits

  • +2 Dexterity, -2 Charisma: Darkspear trolls are physically capable, but suffer downright ugliness.
  • Darkspear trolls are treated as giants. They do not, however, have a set attack bonus, good set of saving throws, skill points, or feats (as they would be defined in the Monster Manual). These are decided by character class.
  • Medium-sized: Darkspear trolls are conferred no bonus and receive no penalty for their size.
  • Darkspear troll base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Battle Frenzy (Ex): When a darkspear troll's hit points are 20% or lower than the his/her maximum, they go into a frenzy of attacking where they gain a +2 to all melee attack rolls due to being able to attack more quickly and with greater ferocity.
  • Fast Healing (Su): Darkspear trolls, though not as good at healing as their counterparts, can regenerate at a fair rate. At levels 1-2, they have Fast Healing 1. At levels 3 and above, Darkspear Trolls have Fast Healing equal to 2 + 1/5 of their character level.
  • Proficient with thrown axe, and shortbow (including composite shortbow) or longbow (including composite longbow). Darkspear troll cultures focus on these weapons for reasons unknown.
  • +2 to Initimidate and Tumble checks: Darkspear trolls can dive and dodge well, and can also put their ornamental tusks to good use when necessary.
  • Automatic Languages: Common and Darkspear (based off of Warcrae). Bonus Languages: Golbin, Dwarven, Orc, Halfling, or Warcrae.
  • Favored Class: Barbarian. If using homebrew content, the DM can choose one of the following instead: gravity warrior or commando
  • Level Adjustment: +0

gollark: I prefer games with actual interesting content, story and gameplay more than ones which do not have this and make up for it with 100GB of textures and assets and fancy graphics.
gollark: I don't play "high end games" because none of my computers are very powerful or have the giant amount of storage needed for modern "high end games".
gollark: This is why I only play with software rendering.
gollark: All tautologies are tautologies.
gollark: Nope. It's still an "EPIC" exclusive, I think, and is Windows only.
