Dagger of Bodysnatching (3.5e Equipment)

Dagger of Bodysnatching: A dagger of bodysnatching is a dagger with limited combat ability, but well worth its price to the correct buyer. The blade is traditionally distinctly wavy and silvery while the hilt is made of gold with darkened etchings.

While the dagger may be able to be used upon inanimate objects, constructs, and even undead as an ordinary +1 dagger, upon a living target it seeks to be used only once. When used upon a living creature, it attempts to slay the target with a single blow minus any physical damage as with a Slay Living spell. The target has an attempt to make a fortitude against death – but no damage occurs if they succeed. A creature who has been struck with the dagger and survives is immune to its effects for 24 hours.

However, if the save attempt fails, they are immediately slain. A second effect is triggered by this which slays the dagger’s wielder with no chance to save vs death. Undead creatures are only affected if they are the wielder of the blade. The dagger then takes the character’s essence and resurrects the wielder inside the target’s now deceased body and immediately disappears. The resurrected wielder inherits the victim’s racial characteristics, strength, dexterity, and constitution scores as with a Reincarnate spell, but only maintains its own intelligence, wisdom, and charisma scores.

If the wielder was undead prior to the strike, they are reincarnated as living once again.

Horror stories have been told of careless use of these daggers – such as an intervening creature leaping in front of the target or even vermin being struck before the blade could touch the intended victim, forcing the wielder to live out their days as a mosquito or cockroach.
