The chest of holding is a type of enchanted chest or trunk that is capable of storing considerably more than it normally would be able to given its size. The chest of holding opens into nondimensional space: Its inside is larger than its outside dimensions. Regardless of what is put into the chest, it weighs a fixed amount. This weight, and the limits in weight and volume of the chest’s contents, depend on the chest’s type, as shown on the table below.

If the chest is overloaded, or if its walls are penetrated (from inside or outside), the chest ruptures and is ruined. All contents are lost forever. Unlike a bag of holding a chest of holding is unable to be turned inside out. If living creatures are placed within the chest, they can survive from 1 to 10 hours (depending on the type of chest), after which time they suffocate. Retrieving a specific item from a chest of holding is a full round action—unless the chest contains more than an ordinary chest of its size would hold, in which case retrieving a specific item requires a DC 10 search check.
If a chest of holding is placed within portable hole a rift to the Astral Plane is torn in the space: Chest and hole alike are sucked into the void and forever lost. If a portable hole is placed within a chest of holding, it opens a gate to the Astral Plane: The hole, the bag, and any creatures within a 40-foot radius are drawn there, destroying the portable hole and chest of holding in the process.
The chest of holding comes with metal (usually steel) clasps that hold the lid shut as well as a hasp that allows for the chest to be locked shut.
