Champion, Savage Attacker (5e Subclass)
Champion, Savage Attacker
A variant Subclass for the Fighter Class
A slightly improved Champion subclass, with a bit more flavor.
Improved Critical
Beginning when you choose this subclass at 3rd level, your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll o f 19 or 20.
Savagest Attacker
Your understanding of all things “Kill that thing” are reflected in your innate ability to make the most of your weapons. Starting at 3rd level, whenever you roll damage for a melee weapon attack, you can re-roll the weapon’s damage dice and use either total.
Remarkable Athlete
Starting at 7th level, you can add half your proficiency bonus (round up) to any Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution check you make that doesn’t already use your proficiency bonus. In addition, when you make a running long jump, the distance you can cover increases by a number of feet equal to your Strength modifier.
More Improved Critical
At 7th level you are even more better at cutting down your enemies. Your weapon attacks now score a critical hit on a roll of 18-20.
Additional Fighting Style
At 10th level, you can choose a second option from the Fighting Style class feature.
Rub some dirt in it
Your toughness and resilience is reflected in your ability to shrug off the dregs of combat. Gain another second wind at 10th level and your recoveries are now 2d10 + fighter level hp restored
Superior Critical
Starting at 15th level, your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 17-20.
Survivor
At 18th level, you attain the pinnacle of resilience in battle. At the start of each of your turns, you regain hit points equal to 5 + your Constitution modifier if you have no more than half of your hit points left. You don’t gain this benefit if you have 0 hit points.
Notes
This variant is to give some minor tweaks to the Champion Subclass. The original build is adequate, but plays a bit dull compared to the Battlemaster or Eldritch Knight. So, I increased the crit by one at 7th level, so that the unremarkable, Remarkable Athlete has something to pair with.
The real addition is with Savagest Attacker. Savage attacker is a bit of an underpowered feat, closely equaling about a +1 to damage. Allowing the power to apply to all hits, gives a little more excitement to the Champion without overpowering him. At least that is the goal. Adding the extra healing gels nicely with Survivor, again by adjusting slightly, but keeping with the “feel” of the Champion.
