Bear Lore (Int; Trained Only)

This skill represents your knowledge of all things bear-related.

15 + spell levelIdentify a spell being cast. (You must see or hear the spell’s verbal or somatic components. The spell must either conjure a bear or make mention of a bear in the spell name.) No action required. No retry.
15 + spell levelLearn a spell from a spellbook or scroll (wizard only). The spell must make mention of a bear in the spell name. No retry for that spell until you gain at least 1 rank in Bear Lore (even if you find another source from which to try to learn the spell). Requires 8 hours.
15 + spell levelPrepare a spell from a borrowed spellbook (wizard only). The spell must make mention of a bear in the spell name. One try per day. No extra time required.
15 + spell levelWhen casting detect magic, determine the school of magic involved in the aura of a single bear you can see. (If the aura is not a spell effect, the DC is 15 + one-half caster level.) No action required.
20 + spell levelIdentify a spell that’s already in place and in effect. You must be able to see or detect the effects of the spell. The spell must either conjure a bear or make mention of a bear in the spell name. No action required. No retry.
20 + spell levelIdentify bears conjured by magic, such as noting that a celestial bear is present as the result of a Summon Monster spell. No action required. No retry.
20 + spell levelDecipher a written spell (such as a scroll) without using read magic. The spell must make mention of a bear in the spell name. One try per day. Requires a full-round action.
25 + spell levelAfter rolling a saving throw against a spell targeted on you, determine what that spell was. The spell must make mention of a bear in the spell name. No action required. No retry.
25Identify a potion. The spell must make mention of a bear in the spell name. Requires 1 minute. No retry.
20Draw a diagram to allow dimensional anchor to be cast on a magic circle spell. After the diagram is drawn, the magic circle and dimensional anchor can thereafter only affect bears. Requires 10 minutes. No retry. This check is made secretly so you do not know the result.
30 or higherUnderstand a strange or unique magical effect, such as the effects of a magic stream. The effect must involve bears in some way (DM's discretion). Time required varies. No retry.

Note: For the purposes of this skill, a bear is any creature with "bear" (or a compound word containing "bear" in the sense of the animal, such as a werebear) in the title of its creature entry, or in title of the creature entry of the base creature.

Check

You can identify bear-related spells and magic effects. The DCs for Bear Lore checks relating to various tasks are summarized on the table above. Additionally, Bear Lore may be used at a +5 bonus in place of Sense Motive, Survival, Knowledge (nature), or Diplomacy checks, but only when applied to bears. These checks follow the same rules as the skills that they imitate.

Synergy

If you have 5 or more ranks in Knowledge (nature), you get a +2 bonus on Bear Lore checks.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Handle Animal, you get a +2 bonus on Bear Lore checks.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Bear Lore, you get a +2 bonus on Handle Animal checks related to bears.
