Arrancar

Arrancar are the purest form of Hollow.

Physical Description

Sōsuke Aizen’s Arrancar, Tite Kubo

Arrancar appear similar to the mortal species they once were, with the exception of variations unique to each individual, such as having a completely pale complexion or exaggerated facial features. Many also have tatoo-like markings on various parts of their body, especially their faces. Alongside these traits, all Arrancar have a fragment of a bone-like “mask” attached to their skull, and a hole that goes through some part of their body.

History

All Arrancar were once Hollows, a powerful, warped form of undead bearing distinct masks. One way or another, they were able to remove most of their mask. This gifted them a body more similar to their appearance before their death and an intelligence to match. They are considered to be a top priority target by Soul Reapers, a form of spiritual warrior created with the intent of “purifying” Hollows into normal souls through combat. Though existing beforehand, the most well known and powerful Arrancar were created by a rogue Soul Reaper named Sōsuke Aizen using the Hōgyuko, an ancient artifact that amplified the mask removal process.

Society

The Arrancar form societies that are ruled by the ten strongest of their race. Each of these ten have their own domain separate from the rest, and friction among them isn’t uncommon. They often act in a faux-traditional manner, most likely in mockery of the Soul Reapers sent to hunt them. The name Arrancar means “to tear off” in Spanish, and “ripped mask” in Japanese.

Arrancar Names

As a form of intelligent undead, Arrancar retain the naming scheme of whatever race they originated from, though not necessarily their original name.
