Physical Qualities
Apelings are a fusion of human and monkey traits. Their fur, 5 feet long tails, ape faces, and most other physical characteristics suggest monkey and thus they are closer to primate than man. However their intelligence, larger size, and more bipedal posture suggest the influence of human traits. Despite the smallness of their distant cousins, apelings are closer to the size of a small human yet their strength is more comparable to an orc or dwarf than human. They usually have more defined muscles than monkeys although they are still rather slender, keeping a very athletic appearance.
Apelings age fast, reaching full adulthood in only 12 years. Although apelings only have a slightly shorter lifespan than humans, their active nature and lifestyle means they burn through their years faster than a human, putting their average lifespan at 60 years. Few careful and more quiet apelings may live to see 100 and usually hold roles as tribal leaders and chiefs. Despite aging fast, apelings do not feel the usual effects of old age until months before their death, many still adventuring within the last year of their life.
Apeling Attitudes and Beliefs
Apelings are usually very confident, headstrong, and upbeat. Their confidence doesn't mean they're boastful, however; apelings appreciate and uphold the achievements of a group over the achievements of an individual.
Apeling Communities
Apelings usually live in small, closely held tribal communities. Entire nations or cities of apelings are few and far apart. Leadership roles are often held either by the elders or by the most personally accomplished, however leaders generally don't have much power as many apelings prefer group decisions over the decisions of one individual. In the traditional sense, apelings do not have "families" and usually have an "all kin are family" mentality.
Apeling Adventurers
Most apeling adventurers tend to be more independent than their kin at home, but still hold on a lot to their sense of family and loyalty. Three sample apeling adventurers are described below.
Jun is an apeling ranger. Being taught to hunt at a young age, Jun learned to respect nature and developed a close bond to it. Seeing his banishment from the tribe as more a test than a punishment, he wanders the land and travels in order to one day find his true calling.
Zheng is an apeling monk. Rather than being raised in a tribal village, Zheng was raised by his grandfather in some great mountain, isolated from the world. After learning to focus his energy rather than let it wild like his kin, Zheng peacefully wanders the world, hoping his mentor's spirit guides him through to his fate.
Xiu is an apeling rogue. Her parents being poor migrants to an unfamiliar city, Xiu faced many hardships. She had to learn to steal and cheat in order to survive. Now an experienced thief, Xiu steals for sport instead of survival.
Roleplaying an Apeling
Apelings provoke either a lot of love from certain people or a lot of hate. The apeling's strong sense of companionship and cheeriness may cause some people to make quick friends with an apeling. On the other side, many people may find their endless energy obnoxious and find them ignorant.
