Alignments of Teoryran (Teoryran Supplement)

The citizens in Teoryran are more complex than those in other worlds. Very few people in teoryran are remotely or nominally good, evil or even neutral and that sort of person is always insane( including visitors from other dimensions). Good and evil are just masks most people use for their own purposes to manipulate or intimidate others. Basicially all Teoryrans belongs to groups that consider themselves good and an all others evil. Good characters kills heretics and witches because they where evil for example.

Morality in the universe consists of two aspects, relative morality and absolute morality. Relative morality is when one person percieves an object as good or evil depending on if they are enemies or friends, social status, egoistic benefits or if they have same religion. If the person can not decide the object is perceived to be neutral. Each time the object interacts with somebody new he gets a different aligment. What a person actually have or have not done doesn't enter the equation, there simply aren't anyone that have that sort of objective clearity.

Absolute morality is wheter an object is a part of a universal and logical order or universal chaos. Order and Chaos are universal patterns that exists independent of sentient beings and both are inherent in the material plane. Chaos existed before there was a universe, but order can be destroyed. Order is more relative than chaos, there are different forms of order that oppose eachother and chaos is basically the union of many small opposing orderly forces. The forces of chaos and order also rules humanoid or sentient existence making sentient species either lawfull, neutral or chaotic. Objective morality is always extreme and creatures tend to be seduced the higher mental scores they have. Because the objective morality is inherent in the universe, only low intelligent beings can be neutral to chaos or order but every advanced civilisation, every highly evolved animal and every gifted individual gravitate against the extremes. Creatures that follow patterns of extreme anarchy or extreme tyrannism are always more successful so extreme patterns always spread and balanced patterns always dies out. All sentient beings that exercise some sort of control gravitate against lawfull.

  • For example:

The village that is populated by will-be-slaves or cannon-fodder recruits is neutral relative good. The ethnic minority that is fading away and mourning the loss of their unique and exotic culture is neutral relative good.

The bloodthirsty tyrant that rules by fear and might-makes-right is lawfull relative good. He is automatically considered a just, kind and benevolent leader because he gravitate against oder and all order aliegned creatures sympathise with him. To lawfull aliegned he really feels like a good guy, nobody can think objective about the actual actions.

Alignments Teoryran has
  • morally relative axis.

and a

  • morally objective axis.

Good and evil are relative as opposed to other settings where they are objective. But law and order are objective.

There are two dimensions of alignments in Teoryran. Objective and Relative Morality.

Lawfull Good

Most people likes you, those that don't are either all dead or would never show their face to you. A hard and even tyranic ruler with harsh, harsh laws and random capital punishment here and there is clearly for the good of all. At least they lived a life with some rights and died for a greater purpose than those other ruts. Heretics, heathens and women are all evil!, they just don't know it it yet. If they don't follow the law then you can't possible be a good person. The widespread corruption of everyone that bends the slightest rule have naturally justified every genocide and every slavery. Control is good in itself, no cost is to high.

  • allies see you as lawfull good becouse:

You are loyal to your family and King. You seek new ways to do more good by expanding on and working within your lords(or your own) rules. You provide and protect your fellows, keep your word or the closest thing to it without being reminded. Despite everything, you are very kind and caring to everyone with the same ethnicity and religion as you are. So for most people you are kind and blindly trusted to to the point of denial of those other things you do.

  • enemies see you are lawfull evil becouse:

You are needlessly ruthless and cruel towards criminals and diviants. Suffering is their right and duty! You seek new cruel way to benefit yourself and punnish diviants within the rules. It's called persecution. Most of your enemies are lawfull good themselves and they can't understand that they are just as lawfull evil as you.

Neutral Good

Everybody hates you, you are a heretic because you don't take side for or against the dominating rulers and religion. For you good is balance, not order or chaos. Sometimes, lawfull or chaotic characters perceive you as true neutral in regard to subjective morality but usually they will perceive you as more evil than their opposite. You help and betray both tyrants and rebels. For you the balance is good in itself. even if that means you have to kill to mantain balance. Empathy and compassion are things breaks down societies but also restrinct and destroy individual identities. You think both the tyrants and the heretics are evil because they kill people and you are just as intolerant and chaotic as both sides together.

  • allies see you as lawfull good becouse:

You are compassionate and compromsising. You rarely seem to take sides.

  • enemies see you as lawfull evil becouse:

You are intolerant and untrustworthy to everyone.

Neutral Evil

Because characters that are neutral about order and chaos, don't have any own codified opinions or beliefs and they don't have any groups that considers them "good", it is possible for such characters to be truly evil. Neutral characters are not chaotic enought to disregard all their morality and compromise and breaks their morality. Their rules are paradoxical and self-contradicting therefore they are always "immoral" and are incapable of justifying their own actions to themselves as individuals. A chaotic character can justify himself by not having any morality at all or by having a chaotic morality but a neutral characters can never feel he is good and he can never make chaotic or lawfull societies to think he is good. No Chaotic or lawfull character will perceive a neutral character as good so it is possible for a character to be truly evil. Once a neutral character is considered evil by both himself and others he will neglect the world until he doesn't contribute and doesn't fit in the cause more harm than he cause benefits. The Neutral Evil character can never coexist with nor contribute to other neutral characters because they aren't similar enought.

Chaotic Good

You don't care what others think, you are the freedrom fighter. A harsh society where the strong gut the weak for breakfeast is clearly for the good of all. At least they lived free lives. Tyrants and all that compromise, everyone that try to cooperate with the powers that be are corrupt and evil. The corruption of all rules, all without exception justify whatever you want to do by comparison. Total freedrom is good in itself no matter how many has to sacrificed.

Objective Morality

Objective Morality refers to logically measurable ideologies and personality traits. Examples are the codes of Laws or characters with an impulsive conscience. They represents societies, religions and politics as opposed to feelings.

They are:

Chaos,
Neutral
True Evil
Order.

Relative Morality

Relative Morality refers to a characters general tendency to generally helpful or generally hostile . Some characters are full of hate all the time and some are full of love all the time and seem thus more "generally" friendly to all people or generally the enemies of all people. This is subjective in Teoryran. In Teoryran your heroes will perceive NPC and pc with another religion, culture or race, social class or gender is perceived as gradually more evil.

Usually this means that for lawfull heroes any genocide or any war that follows their code is automatically ignored or perceived as benevolent. Lawfull characters cannot perciece benevolent traits in a chaotic character and cannot understand or remember malevolent aspects of lawfull societies.

For a lawfull hero all genocidial thyrants are misunderstud and mild benevolent dictators but for a chaotic character any leader is a genocidal thyrant. Chaotic characters always idealise murderous outlaws.

Neutral characters idealise other neutral things and only see malevolence in anyone who takes sides.

Teoryran and Other Worlds

This is a universal law build in in the universe where Teoryran was created. The worlds of other settings of Dungeon and Dragon are morally absolute. Why this is is partially because the races and because of the gods but mostly it is because the cultures of Teoryran.

Visitors from other worlds maintain their own alignment system but detect alignment from Teoryran spells does not work on such visitors and vice versa. All alignments requirements of any classes such as paladin becomes temporary failed by default for anyone that visits the opposite world. Paladins automatically becomes ex-paladins for example.
