This content intends to provide a different experience, or goes beyond the scope of the anticipated subjects and situations, than the 5th edition rules were intended to handle. This race is stronger than the first party version but attempts to negate some of its strength by removing traits granted by the base race in its subraces.

Aarakocra

A plethora of new options for the aarakocra race.
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2.
Age. Aarakocra reach maturity by age 3. aarakocra live to an average of 80 years.
Alignment. Most aarakocra are good and rarely choose sides when it comes to law and chaos. Tribal leaders and warriors might be lawful, while explorers and adventurers might tend toward chaotic.
Size. Aarakocra are about 5 feet tall. They have thin, lightweight bodies that weigh between 80 and 100 pounds. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.
Wings. You have large wings sticking out of your back that, when fully extended outwards, give you a wingspan equal to twice your height. All armor and back accessories must be tailored to accommodate your wings.
Flight. You have a flying speed of 50 feet. In order to fly, you can’t be over-encumbered, wearing medium or heavy armor and you must have 15 feet of space of either side of you.
Talons. Your talons are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common, Aarakocra, and Auran.
Subrace. Choose one of the subraces below.

Eagle

Due to their stern glares and commanding presence, eagles are viewed as the most influential of all aarakocra.

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1.
Eagle Eyes. Whenever you make a Wisdom (Perception) check to make out details at a far distance, you are considered proficient in the Perception skill and add double your proficiency bonus to the check, instead of your normal proficiency bonus.

Macaw

Due to their vividly colorful and flamboyant plumage, macaws are viewed as the most beautiful of all aarakocra.

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1.
Mimicry. You can mimic sounds you have heard, including voices. A creature that hears the sounds you make can tell they are imitations with a successful Wisdom (Insight) check opposed by your Charisma (Deception) check.

Owl

Due to their stoic nature and vast knowledge of the world, owls are viewed as the wisest of all aarakocra.

Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Potoo

Due to the camouflaging nature of their plumage, potoo can be very hard to detect when frozen in place.

Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Natural Camouflage. You are proficient in the Stealth skill.

Finch

Due to their small stature and preference for staying out in the open, finches are rarely seen or noticed.

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 1.
Smaller Stature. You are around 3 feet tall as opposed to the usual 5. Your size is Small and you only need 10 feet of space in order to fly.
Naturally Stealthy. You can attempt to hide even when you are obscured only by a creature that is at least one size larger than you.

Raven

Due to their high intelligence and penchant for trickery, ravens are viewed as the most mischievous of all aarakocra.

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 1.
Mischievous Nature. You are proficient with the disguise kit.

Albatross

Due to their enormous wingspans and incredible athleticism, albatross are viewed as the most physically imposing of all aarakocra.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 1.
Huge Wingspan. Your height is around 7 feet as opposed to the usual 5 feet. You require 20 feet of space in order to fly as opposed to the usual 15 feet.
Webbed Feet. You lose access to the Talons racial trait.
Strong Wings. You can still fly if you are wearing medium armor.
Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Chicken

Aarakocran society usually looks down on chicken aarokocra due to their inability to fly. Their anxious tendencies also haven't helped their view in the public eye.

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 1.
Flightless Birds. You lose access to the Flight, Wings, and Claustrophobic racial traits. Chicken aarakocrans enjoy confined spaces as it reminds them of their safe coops.
Paranoid. You have disadvantage on saving throws against being frightened but you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed.
Panicked Flapping. You can reduce the damage you would take from falling by 50 feet as long as you are not grappled, incapicitated or restrained.
Nimble Escape. You can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of your turns.

Penguin

Aarakocran society usually looks down on penguin aarokocra due to their inability to fly. They are appreciated for the vast quantity of fish that they provide for their settlements though.

Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1.
Flightless. You lose access to the Flight, Wings, and Claustrophobic racial traits.
Webbed Feet. You lose access to the Foot Talons racial trait.
Swift Swimmers. You have a swimming speed of 50 feet.
Artic Dwellers. You are resistant to cold damage and have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks made in artic environments.

Ostrich

Aarakocran society usually looks down on ostrich aarokocra due to their inability to fly. They are typically utilized as couriers in areas where flight would be an impossibility. Your height is around 7-8 feet as opposed to the usual 5 feet.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 1.
Flightless. You lose access to the Flight, Wings, and Claustrophobic racial traits.
Strong Legs. You lose access to the Foot Talons racial trait. Instead, you can move twice as far when jumping.
Fast Runners. You have a base walking speed of 35 feet.
Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
