The idea of a (13,1)c/31 spaceship was mentioned by Gabriel Nivasch upon completion of the original caterpillar, before any oblique spaceships were found or constructed in Life.[1] Some initial work on helix variants and other crawler-supporting mechanisms was done in 2016.[2]
