Nitrogen

Nitrogen is a fast and lightweight (GTK2) desktop background browser and setter for X Window.

Installation

Install the nitrogen package.

Usage

Run nitrogen --help for full details. The following examples will get you started:

Setting wallpaper

To view and set the desired wallpaper from a specific directory recursively, run:

$ nitrogen /path/to/image/directory/

To view and set the desired wallpaper from a specific directory non-recursively, run:

$ nitrogen --no-recurse /path/to/image/directory/

Restoring wallpaper

To restore the chosen wallpaper during subsequent sessions, autostart the following command:

$ nitrogen --restore &

Troubleshooting

Freeze with dual monitors

Remove the current nitrogen configuration:

$ rm -r ~/.config/nitrogen/
gollark: Without the ID thing, though.
gollark: I mean, my networking thing is effectively a port of rednet, and thus really inefficient and bad, which is probably why it uses so much power?
gollark: Probably, but then I would have had to hook everything to skynet/SPUDNET or something.
gollark: Yes, I'm aware.
gollark: I also had a server rack with a bunch of devices with linked cards (and wireless ones) relaying packets to remote locations, and under heavy load *that* apparently sometimes just crashes despite being connected to a several-kRF/t power supply.
