Pretty Cure and Allies

Padme Amidala Morton/Cure Sumi

Performer: Dakota Fanning, Voice: Misato Fukuen (Japanese)

  • Afraid of Blood: Not afraid per se, as she believes that "fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate... leads to suffering", but when she sees blood, she'll always put on a pair of shades and try to imagine the blood as blue, black, pink, whatever.
  • Catch Phrase: On numerous occasions where she sees a significant amount of blood, she tends to say "I have a bad feeling about this" or a variation thereof right before whipping out her Cool Shades.
  • Everyone Owns a Mac: Well, she does. A Quadra 700, to be precise. And it uses Ethernet when connecting to the Internet, in case you were wondering how she could get an email on that early '90s machine.
  • Fake Brit
  • Parody Religion: She's a Jedi Knight. No, really, she lives in Brighton (known for having the highest number of Jedi Knights as citizens out of the rest of the UK), for crying out loud!
  • Skirt Over Slacks: As Cure Sumi, as well as with one of her casual outfits.
  • Sophisticated As Hell: Engages with Ryan in a game of The Dozens in episode 3. She uses colorful Basic profanity, F words, Huttese insults, Mandalorian maledictions, indelicate droid etiquette, swears by the [INSERT STAR WARS-RELATED TERM HERE], "what the" expletives, filial insults, and Yuuzhan Vong invectives throughout.
  • Steel Ear Drums: Averted, to the point where a bat's ultrasonic noise is enough to send her flying toward the ceiling with smoke coming out of her ears. It's all Played for Laughs, though.

Ryan Montana/Cure Kyukaiten

Performer: Rupert Grint, Voice: Victoria Harwood (English) and Shizuka Ito (Japanese)

  • Crosscast Role
  • Dance Battler/I Know Madden Kombat
  • English Rose
  • Foreign Cuss Word: Having been born in Moscow, Ryan swears in Russian every now and then; for example, she yells "Govno!"[1] in episode 2 when her feet start hurting a bit because her Cure form wears pointe shoes, and Ryan really isn't accustomed to wearing them.
  • Gender Blender Name
  • Generation Xerox: Not exactly; while her mother once danced with the Bolshoi Ballet, it's her sister Catherine who's the ballerina in this generation, though this would explain why Ryan's gymnastics uniform looks more balletic in design than those of the rest of the gymnastics squad (all of Ryan's gymnastics uniforms were previously used by her older sister for ballet class) and why she's sometimes mistaken for a ballet student (as seen in episode 1). She also starts wearing pointe shoes for a few minutes at a time starting in episode 3 following an incident where her feet started hurting during her first fight in episode 2; these increments of time gradually increase until her feet stop hurting when she's in Cure form for prolonged periods of time.
  • The Glasses Come Off: Inverted.
  • Gratuitous Russian: Uses Russian terminology here and there.
  • Leotard of Power
  • Meganekko: Sometimes, especially during gymnastics practice. Her reason? "When I move around, so do my contacts, and it feels uncomfortable on my eyes." She wears them with an Elastic Sports Band safety strap so they stay on even when she's doing cartwheels, flips, backbends, etc.
  • Name's the Same: She shares her name with the author; Word of God states that it's either coincidental or for no reason at all.
  • Never Gets Drunk: Justified; Word of God says that grapes are used in her vodka for teetotaling purposes.
  • Not Even Bothering with the Accent: Even though she was born in Moscow and lived there for eight years, she still uses BBC English, with no trace of Russian in her speech (except when she's actually speaking the Russian language).
  • Not What It Looks Like: In the first episode, Padme tells her, "Have fun in ballet class!" Ryan takes note of the mistake immediately:

Ryan: You may be looking for my sister. This is actually my gymnastics uniform. I'm a gymnast. My sister's the ballerina in the family.
Padme: Well, judging from those slippers, you look more like you're dressed for ballet lessons than for gymnastics practice.
Ryan: To tell you the truth, those ballet slippers were actually my sister's. We used to share those slippers for our respective activities--Catherine for her ballet, and me for my gymnastics. Now that she's in London and a member of the Royal Ballet, she left me these slippers full-time.

  • Olympic Games: She hopes to participate in the Rio de Janeiro games in 2016.
  • Opera Gloves: As Cure Kyukaiten, as well as with her formal gown.
  • Overly Long Name: Especially by the standards of her country of birth; her birth name is Rayana Elizaveta Mariusovna Montanya (Ра́янa Eлизaвeтa Ма́риусовна Монтаня), which became Ryan Elizabeth Marie Montana when the family moved to Brighton.
  • Production Posse: With Susana, Tina, Sheila, Hyde, Yoruna, Mary, Nurse Richards, and China.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: She wears tights more often than the rest of the cast!
  • Real Life Relative: Rupert Grint's sister Georgina plays Emma Watson's twin sister.
  • Shown Their Work: Ryan apparently remembers how painful it is to wear pointe shoes if you're not used to them, because she makes this badly written, very unrealistic remark while her feet are in a bit of discomfort during her first fight:

Ryan: Говно́! I'd nearly forgotten why my sister only wore these shoes for short increments of time when she first started dancing en pointe!
