Due to historic overfishing, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) considers the species "depleted", however, the Marine Stewardship Council, has certified the Heard Island Mackerel Icefish fishery as sustainable and well managed. This fishery has been certified since 2006.[3]

Its normal size is 22-25 inch long, and only 1 inch when it is born.[4] They live up to 15 years and eat krill.[5]
