Hampstead is a civil parish[lower-alpha 1] in Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada.[2]

For governance purposes it is divided between CFB Gagetown and the local service district of Hampstead;[3] the Saint John River islands are not part of the local service district.

History

Hampstead Parish was established in 1786. It was named for Hempstead, Long Island, New York. New Brunswick's last surviving African Canadian community is in the parish, Elm Hill. Elm Hill was established in 1806. Until 1838, Hampstead included part of Petersville Parish.

Delineation

Hampstead Parish is defined in the Territorial Division Act[2] as being bounded:

Northwest by Gagetown Parish; southwest by Petersville Parish; southeast by the County line and by the Saint John River, including Upper Musquash Island and Spoon Island and the western half of Long Island to be determined by a line running lengthwise through the centre of the island from the head to the foot of the same.

Civil parishes served a variety of government functions until 1966, when the new Municipalities Act stripped them of their responsibilities; they continue to provide convenient boundaries for government uses, especially electoral districts and local service districts.
