Canadian Veal Association

The Canadian Veal Association is an advocacy group promoting the interests of veal producers and veal slaughterhouses. Throughout its history, the CVA has worked to improve market access for Canadian beef producers and in lobbying efforts with the Canadian government.[1][2]

Code of Practice

In November 2017, the CVA together with the National Farm Animal Care Council updated a document called "Code of Practice for the care and handling of veal cattle", which it defines as "mostly male dairy calves raised for white or pink veal." The guidebook was last updated in 1998. A 17-member committee that included veal producers, researchers, veterinarians, government and humane society activists oversaw the work.[3]

Life of a Canadian veal

In Canada, there exist two streams of veal production. The streams are determined based on what is fed to the baby calves: either milk, or grain. The milk-fed veal tend to have whiter-textured flesh, while the grain-fed veal tend to have pink-textured flesh. The male calves are typically destined for early slaughter as veal while the heifers are destined to continue life as dairy cattle. Over its lifetime, a milk-fed calf will drink about 2,000 litres of milk.[4]

The Association is headquartered in Guelph, Ontario and is incorporated under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act.[5]
